  • XS1100 Sport cafe racer project

Here are some pics of the building of two Sports (5K7), bought by a friend of mine called Ief Warson from Belgium.
It all started last year with buying two projects , both Dutch bikes and in a sorry state. Both bikes had been standing for lots of years. Although delivered with a lot of spares we decided we could only build one original bike and one caferacer. And as Ief wanted to drive in summer (read : the summer of 2014 ) we decided to start with the caferacer. Now that would speed up things

Here some pics directly after the sale... two bikes

including lots of boxes with parts ...

one bike was stripped and the frame went off for blasting and coating, the color is black with a silver metalflake to brighten things up. Engine was tested and it ran, although very rough but on all fours. It was washed with degreaser and painted with VHT black wrinkle.

All bolts to be replaced by stainless steel ones. Carbs were taken apart and cleaned thoroughly

Soon frame and engine were married again ...

frame was altered at the rear to get the caferacer look

Stock shocks were dismantled and coated and painted:

And of course the obligatory exhaust stud was broken off .... duhhhhh ..

Well, it took a while but as the bike is still not finished due to every session ending in drinking beer …

…. I’m gonna post some pics because these stories need a decent end, too many unfinished stories on the internet..
Here you can see after we fitted the K&N’s , we made a strut on top of the carbs to hold them, also visible the Fireblade coils with the screw-in red plug wires.

Later we rubber mounted the carb struts to stop vibration messing up the floats.. and check out the relocated ignition switch ..

We mounted the stock oil cooler and a solid gold oil pan, just to show off ……

We fitted a new headlamp with a ring of leds surrounding the H4 lamp….

                  … a T&T electronic Speedometer/Tachometer combination …

Turns out that we would move that headlamp several times and to different locations as we were not pleased with the looks.

Some nice Brembo brakes on home made adapter plates to get some nice braking up front …

Check the adjustable head lamp mount ..

Easier to handle oil filler bolt for the middle drive gear ..

Then we mounted the stock black downpipes and wrapped them. We bought some empty fat shorties which fitted to the stock downpipes and made some baffles to fit in the mufflers and filled them with ceramic wool.

installed a Telefix fork brace ….

… and relocated the rear caliper by cutting and welding the stock adapter plate ..

..... will be continued soon ....

Looks great, is that a 17" rear wheel? Nice touch with the caliper at the bottom like a newer machine.
