  • ? about gas tank fittment

About to pick up a 79 standard with no tank. Will a 78 - 81 tank fit? Matter if its standard or special? I'm on ebay and there are a few choices. I dont want to do any fab work.

    Thanks!

The seat/side covers may not line up properly or interfere when going to a different tank.

Edit: Yes, 78-80 Standard tanks are all the same, 81 is different.

All xs11 tanks fit all models.

One difference is that the gas gauge sender is different between the standard and special but you can swap in the correct sender for your gauge cluster without issue. The senders are on different sides of the frame tunnel too but it does not make a difference. In your particular case you will have to put your special gas gauge send in the standard tank "upsidedown" in order to keep it reading correct. It may make the wires too short to reach the plug, but that's a easy fix.

Other difference is that if you use a special tank on a Standard there will be a small gap in front of the seat due to the shape of the seat and the shape of the gas tank. The gap is not really noticeable though. I really never even noticed it when I had a special tank on my standard.

Side cover fitment is not an issue.

Remember that petcocks don't swap between the two tank styles.... Make sure you have the right ones for the tank.
