  • camshaft end plugs

What was the purpose of putting these plastic plugs in the cylinder head? I noticed a slight leak just above this and it loks like it was just the gasket leaking a little oil from the valve cover gasket. The plug was a little loose when I pulled the valve cover off.

I was wondering if the gasket sealent will do the job to hold the plug i place or should I order one and wait. to put the valve cover back on.

As I said, it is a little loose and it looks like it has a small chip in it but it does not look like it effects it too much. The part is in stock at partsandmore onlune for $2 each.

Should I order and wait or should the gasket sealent take care of it?

And were these put in so they can be pulled without pulling the cover to inspect the camshaft?

    Hey Jon,

Geezer will probably know the "REAL" answer, but my guess is that it was for the milling of the heads, since they had to cut the bearing surfaces into the actual cam clamps, and to match the cams!? I could be wrong, but seems logical to me?

I believe there is a tech tip about using RTV around the seals to raise them to help them make a better seal, so it depends on how much of a rush you are to get it back together and ride!

The plugs are there because of the milling process used in the manufacture of the head. I have tried sealing old ones with sealer, but they still leaked. I would order new ones, seal it the best I could so I could ride, then put the new ones in when I had time.
