  • Cycle World -- Jan '15 -- XS too good?

    ==========
    I don't know if this is the right spot for this but I was reading comments or letters to the editor and some guy was lamenting that he wanted to get an XS going again but the lack of aftermarket ignition parts had him questioning *IF* it was a good idea.

    CW responded, "There is a lack of aftermarket support because the ignitions were simply too good." It's not the first time I've read that Yamaha literally was worried their product was too good; that riders would never replace their bikes with new ones and sales would suffer. I'm honored that we got some of the good stuff which can be kept going forever before they started designing obsolescence into their products like the auto makers and everyone else.

    CW also noted that ignition modules, coils, etc. are cheap and easy to find on Ebay. One could buy spares of everything and carry them with you on a longer trip for peace of mind. I trust that if used parts get too expensive at some point, some aftermarket entity will step up to fill the void . . . and perhaps some have already. As these same engines (puffed up to 1200 and 1250 cc) are used in The Legends race cars, is there any sharing of intel between that group and this one? It's pretty cool to look through the grille and see that familiar engine.

    All good, but they are a bit behind the times. That car class, having been around for a while now have gone to R1 and other higher hp motors. Initially, the XS11 motor WAS the most popular one used for that roundy-roundy class, just because of the abuse it would take and still produce decent power.
