    Tranny inspection

I have several motors in my parts supply.
Short of taking the time to get them mounted in a bike, and get them running, is there a reasonably accurate way to determine the condition of the gearbox?
Can the gears be seen well enough to determine their condition without tearing the case apart?

    TIA

You can remove the oil pan.

FWIW...thinking this over, no easy way. Least extensive method is to begin the '2nd gear fix' but only to the point where you have the left-hand cover and shift lever mechanism removed. The 5th gear comes out of the tranny from the side, no need to pull the oil pan or split the cases.

You have to examine the 5th gear slots. If they show any wear, the 2nd gear dogs are worn and you have to complete the rest of the 2nd gear fix to correct any problems. 2nd gear dogs, 5th gear slots, and shift fork wear are the most common issues.

If you pull the 5th gear and the slots look pristine, you *probably* have a good transmission.

        Hey there NewMaac,

Here's the view with the tranny/oil pan and oil pump off. The countershaft bearing cover has been removed, but 5th gear hasn't been slid out yet, it's in 4th gear, and even if the shift fork was was around 5th gear like it's supposed to be, I don't believe there is enough space separated between the gears to allow you to be able to view the dogs and slots adequately, so like Jerry said, you'll probably need to get it to this point where you can get the gear out and look at it, and hopefully it won't look like this:

The picture reference says 1st gear, but this is 5th gear!

Thanks guys. That was exactly what I was asking. I will try to assess the condition of the various gearboxes that I have.
I would imagine that there will shortly be a few motors offered for sale.
