  • ? about getting title

I just read you can get registration and tags for an bike with no Title for $99 in VT. Then I guess you can get the Title transferred to your state.

I'm in NJ. Wondering if NJ would allow such a transfer. Any Jersians here that can chime in? I'm looking to purchase a bike with no Title (yes, I know,..buyer beware).

I've done this. In NY at least. Here its post a classified ad and x months of no response, you can take ownership.

Does the seller at least have a reggie with his name on it, even an old one?

Not sure of the NJ rules but you should look them up before throwing $ down. I've never used those out-of -state title mills. And I personally wouldn't trust them.

I have this nightmare that someday it's MY bike they're selling out from under me without my knowledge.

Yes I just did one in New Jersey But it comes with strings. The bike must be 15 years old at least If there is a title in new Jersey on file you cant transfer to New Jersey but you can keep the Vermont forever. If the Bike is over 500 cc you have to send a visual notification notarized of the s/n number Most important you have to pay the tax on blue book value not what you paid or bill of sale payment. Look it up and use the average condition value. I just did it for a 200rd from Maryland it was easy and I had title and tag in 2 weeks. Transferred to NJ next day. DO it yourself do not use a title mill

        Eastcoaster,
What do you mean by "title mill". Did you go the VT route like I am suggesting?

        Where in NJ area you?

There are businesses that do this for you "Title Mill" will cost ya at least 300 bucks you can do it through the mail direct yourself for less than a hundred
If they don't get it you are still out the money If you do it yourself and there is a problem you get the check back.

Don't know if this is relevant, but I bought my XJ in '99 from an owner in Maine. No title, only a bill of sale. Maine does not issue titles on older vehicles. Took the bill of sale into my local Wisconsin DOT office and they took it with no problems and issued me a Wisconsin title. (I've since had the same bike titled in Arizona and Colorado.)

Check with your DOT or whoever issues titles in your state and see what documentation they will accept from other states. You might get shot down but you might also get a surprise. Don't assume, as I had, that you must have a title from another state to get the bike titled in your state.
