Why the difference in oil clearances between specials and standards. Did they try to lighten the bikes to offset the EPA detuning requirements, or is this to change the center of gravity to suit the difference in frame style?

Well

something is different between the cranks or the casings and I'm wondering why. Those little guys don't waste time , money or energy doing something without good reason. I'm curious as to what it was and why? Thought it might be related to the style of the frame and weight.
