In order to not hijack another thread, why are the mains and rods not all the same size. Did they have that much trouble holding one size on their machining process?

No, the reason you have 'different' bearings is the factory (due to their more precise measuring methods) could 'select fit' bearings. The difference between these bearings is only a few ten-thousandths, with the difference between the largest and smallest probably being only .001", maybe .002".
There aren't any 'undersized' bearings available in the sense like you would find for most automotive engines; you aren't turning the crank journals on these bikes. These bearings are designed to compensate for 'normal' minor wear only and/or minor variations in the original machining.
The Japanese were ahead of the curve on this; this is now commonly done, with manufacturers select-fitting production parts to get tolerances to one ten-thousandth or less.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
