  • Main Stand Install

Anyone out there that knows an easy way to put the main stand back on. Have a new spring and **** it doesn't have any give, unlike the old one.

Have tried bolting the spring side onto the frame and then sliding the other end in. Only problem scratched the crap out of the new paint. Repainted and ready to try again. Just don't want to keep repainting the stand.

Don't know of any slick and smooth, paintless install of the center stand, If I member rt. I put the bolt opposite of the spring side in 1st.
I'm going to be installing a center stand on another one of mine and have to find a spring to work, care to share your source ?

I used a brake spring tool and it worked pretty well. They are only a couple bucks at Harbor Freight.

I always put the spring onto the stand and the frame, with the bike on the sidestand, of course. Then I pull the stand down with two hands and get the ends with the holes into the frame lugs. Ding it this way gives something substantial to hold onto and pull against the force of the spring. Then I pull one side down a bit and jiggle the bolt through. Then the same on the other side.

            What worked for me

I too tried pulling the spring around after the stand was bolted up and got nowhere.

What worked for me was: I loosely bolted up the left side of the stand (closest to the spring) with the spring in place and the stand in the nearly "up" position (which is the shortest spring length). This left some play on the right side of the stand. Then with the center stand in the nearly "up" position, I roughly aligned the bolt hole on the right, which puts tension on the spring, until I could get a screwdriver in the hole (from the outside) and aligned/held it in place while getting the right side bolt started (from the inside). Then finished tightening everything up.

It took a little monkey motion to get the bolt hole aligned on the right side but not a lot of muscle.

The stand is easy to install if the exhaust/rear footpeg mounts are off. Simply fold it 'up' as far as it'll go and slip the spring on. Bike assembled? Get a friend, a short piece of angle (about the length of the spring coils), and a roll of nickels (or washers, etc). Stretch the spring, and while you have it stretched have your friend drop nickels between each coil, using the angle to hold them in place. This will make it long enough to install, then operate the stand and the nickels will fall out....

That's exactly how I put my centerstand spring on. Well, minus the handy friend...
