I just rebuilt the carbs and getting ready to install. The carbs for this bike came in Bags and boxes.
The carbs were set up with pod filters no air box. This is new to me.
I am not sure what to do with the second set of hose connections on the carbs that normally go to the air box?
    Should they be capped?
    Open to atmosphere ?

I am afraid this might effect the performance if not done correctly.

Do not cap them as they are bowl vents, they must be open to atmosphere, some prefer to put a fuel filter on the end, others leave them open.

Could longer hoses just run to the same place the battery overflow goes ?

As biker Phil sez, don't cap them. It seems that you got a set of older carbs for a newer bike? If that is true you start with jetting and float levels for the older carbs and go from there (you will need to up-size mains probably). What I mean is, don't assume that jetting and float is the same as for newer carbs.

It is a challenge with pod filters but the oval pods like K&N's are probably easier to deal with than the cheaper cone-shaped ones. I have a set of the K&Ns and I really like them, but with my 4-1 Jardine header, I had to use big mains and tune for normal operating speeds... The bike starves for fuel above say 100mph.

Anytime you monkey with aftermarket pipes and air box, I think you have to make concessions that are acceptable. I had to compromise for wide-open throttle, but this is normally where you would want to start on making adjustments. For me it was to get good idle, minimize popping on deceleration (still have rumble and light popping), good torque in the normal operating range with throttle twist, and decent fuel economy. You have to examine the plugs a lot when making adjustments as you don't want to hole the piston crowns or burn the valve seats.

I believe you can run your stock air box from a newer (80 and 81) bike if you drill-out the connecting nipples and run the breather hoses to those.

Yes, the vent hoses could be run there, but IMHO they should be run higher than the float level and into undisturbed air like up under the fuel tank.

Also they should be filtered, don't want any critters making nests in the open ends.

The Bike is a 1978 with the 1978 carbs its a new project.
Thanks for the info on leaving open might look for a screen or a fuel filter to keep out anything.

I just bench tested the carbs I am in trouble floats all good !

But leaking like really bad at the tee. It looks like the Black coating is really torn up.
I have some tees from the later carbs I pulled from the 81 bike anyone know if they are interchangeable?

Just pulled the carbs apart the tees on the older carbs were much about 1/2 shorter I just switched the air box vent tee and the fuel tee. I am going on the bench to test before install now I figured if the air leaked some it would not be a problem

This is a link borrowed from a post by jetmechMarty:

                    http://www.siriusconinc.com/search_r...arch&x=22&y=10

It shows that indeed the earlier tees are shorter.

Using partzilla for the part #'s I assu med they were the same as I haven't got into an earlier set of carbs yet.

Hi, Gordon, glad you're getting started on the '78.

Take a look at the '79 special. Think I put a fuel filter on the end of each of the carb drains.

When working without an Octy I like to set up the fuel as shown in this thread - http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...highlight=fuel. I think my post is on the second page.

Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving.

                          Hi Doug
I got it running yesterday It runs really well
I am working on the brakes the master cylinder is really gunked up and a challenge the snap ring is really rusted and my snap removal tool will not fit in the 78 as well as other years. This master cylinder seem a little different than the others I should have it on the road by today or tomorrow
