I just made solid struts out of 1/4 inch aluminum flat bars and the front forks I pulled out the springs and put in big block ford lifter springs in there. The front wheel is a light weight drag wheel from drag speacialties. I had to go rigid in the rear because the back end tries to buck me off. The turbo is a old kit my dad bought for it when it was his and its made by american turbo pak, its 15 lbs with water injection and adjustable wastegate.
I burned up alot of clutches so I machined the metals off 4 thousands of each side and put a extra clutch in and have had the same clutch in it for 5 years. the trans. has been in there for 10 years no probs., it has been back cut. the only problem I ever have is about once a year I twist a drive shaft untill it breaks in half. it usally will turn 2 times before it snaps

Have you extended the rear swingarm/driveshaft? Or does anyone know how to do this?

no but the easy thing to do to stretch it is do it at the neck ive been thinking of doing it for years but never have.

What's the usual stopping distance/brake quality required for 1/4 mile drags?
So far we got 1 front disc working on the suzukawayamahonmatic. Front wheel looks bout the same.

I am not sure, I know I dont use my front brakes to stop at all, I only use my rear brakes, I usuall go through the traps in 4th gear, I upshift to 5th after the traps, then start downshifting and using rear brake. Our shutdown at Southwestern International Raceway is extremely long though...

I only have one caliper on the front but never use it Bandimere has a big shut down that goes up hill so I just let off and sit up, don't need to even break. My suzuki goes 8.90s and the breaks suck on that bike so never need to use them.

                Driveshaft

Hello there turbox79, why don't you loose the driveshaft. Replace the driveshaft with chain & sprocket, have a new swingarm made for it and take off about 35lb's in weight off the rear end. Now you can put on any tire you want. You will be hard pressed to find many people who drag race bikes with a driveshaft. There must be a reason for that. I would suggest to you that 1- to much weight, 2- your not able to change your gear ratio's, 3- your not able to use wide slicks for better traction, 4- the driveshaft's on most bikes want holdup to the power needed to dragrace, they will twist and snap. I'am working on a blueprint for a custom swingarm for my XS11, hope to have one made this winter. I'll let you know how it turns out.

that would be cool, but I dont race my bike at the track but maybe a handfull of times a year I have a gs thats streached, has a big slick and runs 8.90s no problem. My xs is for shuting up kids with there $10,000 rockets on a 25 year old bike. If there was a swing arm kit for the xs I would probly buy it.

another team race coming up this saturday night, I have lowered my bike about 3 inches total, using handlebar risers and drag bars, then I slid the forks 1" through the triple trees, removed the rear shocks and cut another coil out of them. I am hoping to drop my time a bit ( I also removed the saddlebags, just for the race, cause I already miss being able to haul lunch to work...). But my mods are basically so I can be more comfortable on the launch and maybe more consistent. I have pictures of the handlebars and bike, but I cannot post them here (yet)?

I was also curious if anyone else has raced their XS at a strip and what times they have run...

OK Last saturday nite I went down to the track at Rogersville MO.
It was free test and tune nite so I took advantage of it!!
There was so many people there I only had time to run thrue twice.
It had been since 'bout 1985 or so since I drag raced a motorcycle at the strip even tho I raced my 88 mustang GT and my son's 79 Malibu last spring.
I passed tech no sweat except I forgot my leather so I borrowed a jacket and that was fine (except for being hot and uncomfortable!!)
Now I'm here to tell ya in no way is BattleCat near as fast as my ole '80 Midnite Special but It was really tuned to the max and it was 20 years ago and 20,000 less miles too!!
Any how My first run I ended up being paired with none other than a 1300 Hayabusa...which I thot was rather ironic being at one time our bikes were the fastest!
Well anyhow I was nervous as hell but determined to give him hell so I did my burnout just fine (1st gear-9 grand) done a few chirpies and staged last. He avoided the water altogether and went staight to staging.
I was just hoping not to embarrass myself and family and get at least 13 something!
Anyhow I left with a .873 reaction time (slow), he had a.713...still slow but better than me.

                          1/8th 8.26 7.04
                          1000 ft 10.78 @95.39 mph 8.99 @ 123.42
                          1/4 12.9675 @ 89.17 10.5699 @ 133.92
As you can see I let off too quick to get my mph right but what the hell!!
I was bummin' 'cause I lost and not realizing after 20 years I could still crack a 12 !!!!
Any way after a couple hours I got to run again. It had turned dark and I was praying the dew wouldn't drop and make me any leaner than I already was!
I also vowed to cut a better light and shift a little earlier 'cause last time I was hitten 9600 almost every time...I as hoping for 12.50s
My next opponent was a red Honda 900 Superhawk and I thot hear we go again....
We lined up and I did my 9 grand ++ Burnout and this guy did a wimpy one then I staged last and got my tippy toes behind the pegs and brought up the revvs 'bout 8000 or so and when the last yellow hit I left HARD even tho I was slippin' the clutch a lot I had a .554 reaction to his better .523
I instantly became a lier and never even looked at the tach only him while I wound the guts out'a ole BattleCat all the while spinning mercilessly but by the 60 I had him barely with a 2.13 vs his 2.17 I still had him at the330 ft with a .551 vs his .554 and I'd love to tell ya how I smoked his ass even tho it didn't happen that way!
                          I got a 12.99 and he ran a 12.54
I ran 99.80 mph and he ran 105.04
I may have still let off too soon but it had to be close.
Needless to say I felt a lot more pumped that time 'cause I at least gave him some hell with my ole antique and also ran within 3 hundreths of the same time!!!!!!!!!
I ain't done crap to my tranny so I was carefull not to miss any gears if there is such a thing as carefull at 9500.
So there is my story for all you curious people out there....I rev the livin guts out of it in the burnout, staging and between gears just make sure if you use my method you slip the clutch out'a the hole or you might end up on yer ass or the other lane!!!!

Sounds like fun. I raced in our motorcycle team race two saturdays ago here in Tucson. My best et on that night was 12.60 at around 105 mph. My 60 foots with a cheap cheng-shin tire are now in the 1.88 range. I launch about 5500 and I shift at 8500, I still get the front tire picking up about 4" when I shift to second.

I ran my '79 XS1100SF with 4-1 header and K&Ns, rejetted mains to 145 at the old US-30 dragstrip in Merrillville, Indiana in 1980. To tell the truth, I was afraid to launch the bike the way it should have been done. My times were 13.10s and 13.00s with a top speed around 105. My brother asked me why my top speeds were so low. He also asked if I was shifting into fifth gear. I told him I was since I was hitting redline. He laughed at me and said the short time I'd be above redline in fourth gear wouldn't hurt a thing. My next pass I kept it winding out in fourth gear through the traps and lo and behold my top speed climbed to 113 with an E.T. of 12.69.

His friend raced full blown drag bikes so I asked him to try my bike. Without ever having ridden my machine, he blew down a 12.20 on the first pass. Sorry, don't remember the top speed.

Maybe after I get everything retuned, I'll take her out to Gateway International Raceway for a few passes. Will report if I do.
