  • Errors in the Clymer's manual

After discovering an issue others knew about, I thought I'd start off what might wind up being a sticky:
The valve specs on page 56 are very wrong. Use page VII in the front.

On page VIII, the torque spec is listed as 76 foot pounds. I believe that disagrees with the FSM.

I know the carburetor main jetting information disagrees with the factory parts catalog.

      Marty,

You must be referring to the Clymer entry which shows the "Rear axle nut-Special model" torque spec as 76 foot-pounds ...

Yes, that spec is wrong ... the FSM shows that all models, including Specials, use the same torque spec for that nut, which is 108 ft-lb.

And there are at least 2 other errors on that very same page (Page VIII):

      1) Rear swing arm pivot bolt - Clymer shows a spec of 47 ft-lbs. The correct spec is 47 inch-lbs., NOT ft-lbs.

(Actually, I believe the factory manual shows a range of 43-52 inch-lbs.)

      2) Rear axle pinch bolt/Model SF - Clymer shows a spec of 14.5 ft-lbs. ... My OEM manual shows this spec as 4.5 ft-lbs. (same as the Standard)

        I almost

bought a Clymer manual years ago before I started reading about all the errors in it from users on this forum. At the time I couldn't remember where I had put my factory manual and back then originals were hard to come by.. ebay infancy days. Come to think of it I think I did actually buy the clymers then located my manual a few weeks later. I believe I might have thrown the clymers out after that.

Once the errors are noted, the Clymer manual is a good book. Generally, the procedures are easy to understand.
