  • Wires To/From Connector that's to the Right of Coils

    Hi All,

Though I’ve been a member of the forum for a while, this is my first “real” post and I hope you can help. Apologies in advance if I’m giving too much background. To summarize my questions at the end of this post: Of the 5 wires coming to this connector, what are two of them for?

Anyway, I have a '79 Standard that is a ways away from running but I’ve been making progress. In between working on other items like forks, brakes and cleaning it up, I’m starting to hook up the wiring. The original wiring harness had been hacked up way beyond trying to fix and so a while ago I obtained a replacement harness that was said to also be from a ’79 Standard. Using clues from the old harness there have been no surprises yet and the harness seems to be what it was said to be (looks to me to be in good shape too).

There is a 6 pin black connector located to the right side of the coils. It has 5 wires leading to it (on both the original hacked up harness and the replacement harness). I’ve identified (thanks to the forum) three of the wires but I haven't been able to figure out the other two:

    1) blue/white stripe wire from the solenoid that goes to the starter button

    2) red/white stripe from the solenoid to the kill switch

    3) red/white stripe from the “Ignition” fuse to the kill switch

    4) red/white stripe (I can’t identify) ???

    5) blue/black stripe (I can’t identify) ???

The hacked up harness still had a pigtail remnant connected to the 6 pin black connector. The remnant has the 3 wires that at one time ran to right handlebar switch (the wires were cut off at the switch). The two remaining wires (#4 and #5 above) arrive at this connector but have no matching/connecting wires to this pigtail remnant; these wires dead end at this connector.

This (finally!) brings me to my questions regarding these last two. Where are these two wires from and what are they for? Is it normal/correct for these wires to not be used and dead end at this connector?

    Cheers,

    Tom

Those two wires are only used if your right handlebar control has the 'headlight on/off' switch. These switches were only fitted to the '78 and some early '79 bikes, but Yamaha left the wires for the switch in the main harness after they dropped the switch for some reason. This was to bypass the headlight relay if the bike wasn't running. You can ignore them...

After I thought about it some, I think Yamaha left those wires in the harness because the non-North America spec bikes retained that switch, so they left the wires for ease of parts supply.
