  • Yamaha parts replacement mufflers (mufflers only)

I have a set of Yamaha XS1100 special mufflers that do not include the down pipes and collector. They are specifically made to be used as replacement mufflers when the factory setup ( full right or left side with downpipes ) were damaged or rotted. The part number is the same as on any 79-80 special. Years ago I mentioned this to an older (longtime in business) dealer and he said YES they could be ordered. I have not seen them in any Yamaha parts diagram. Does anyone else have any of these or can anyone else verify these were available for a time ? These mufflers are not just cut off from a main assy. The outer forward edge was rolled inward and the kit came with a flange to weld on to the collector and bolt to the muffler using a Yamaha clamp.

These muffs were replacement OEM, the stock set is 4 pc. (2 pipes for 2&3, and 2 pipes for 1&4 with collectors and mufflers). So the only way you would use these is if your stock headers were damaged and you needed a whole new exhaust system. The entire exhaust replacement would be 6 pc., 2 inside headers for 2&3, 2 outside for 1&4 and 2 mufflers that just clamped on.
I had 1 side that was made up this way on an SH I sold.
I don't know if the stock head pipes could be cut in order to clamp these on ?
It is more common for the muffs to get road rash or rust out than the head pipes.
I believe the XJ came with separate clamp on mufflers.

      XJ yes XS ?

Correct Doneby the XJ had separate muffler head pipe parts. The XS was a one piece right or left main assy. I have never seen the Special 1979 or 1980 with a separate muffler in any of the catalogs . Dealer told me the replacement (kit ) for the Special contained the muffler and a weldable collector end. I will post pic later. I just could never confirm this replacement kit as no one had ever seen one. There is a nice xj muffler set on ebay right now and the ends look just like my 79 special. The xj has a slash cut though on the output end.

Interesting, it sounds like the dealer knew the replacement muffs could be welded onto the original headers/collector ?
On my LH I had to use pipes from Midas to adapt these dunstall replica muffs to the collector (pic. b4 I smashed it).

Those headers/collectors have the joint for a slip on muffler ?
Do the mufflers have the plate that reads meets emission standard or some such ?

                mufflers

If the dimensions are correct a slip on type muffler can fit inside the collector .
I have seen the ( safety message ) plate. These do not have it.

I bought a brand new complete system for the Special with the bolt-on mufflers on Ebay, still in Yamaha boxes. It is now fitted to my girl friends' Special. It also has the emissions plates on the sides. The number in the mufflers are 3H3-14711 and 3H3-14721. I think these were later sets sold in combination with the XJ downpipes.
