WELL over 100k miles with the auto-tensioner and no problems. With so many different things out there that basically have the same setup as the XS with overhead cams and slipper tensioners that use these auto-tensioners, I don't feel like the fears are valid. I used to ride extremely aggressive, and on repeated really hard throttle chops, I'd have to pull over and adjust the OEM tensioner. Often. Several times, it would shoot that plug out, so that was something I always had to have extra of. There seems to be such a fine line between adjusting the tensioner nut to where it will always hold.. and the point where you start to strip those aluminum threads. Most don't carry a torque wrench on trips, but even properly torqued didn't always hold. Plus that drip that never seemed to go away. The tensioner is aimed down and fills with oil. The cap is supposed to keep this pooling oil inside, but with oil always sitting there, the tiniest passageway through will let it drip.
The only downside I see to the manually adjusted tensioners like TC has is that I'd still have to mess with it occasionally and I wouldn't have any idea if I was putting the right amount of pressure on the chain with the right amount of torque? The auto-tensioners just gives you the ability to install... and likely never think about it again. I prefer to just ride, not wrench on stuff.
Just my 2 cents.
