This transmission will not even go into 1st. It just skips when you try. You know, the machine gun thing.

I don't think the dogs are repairable

You've got some grinding to do, but that's fixable.....

And it's only damaged on one side, so that gives you a nice reference surface to work off of.

Cool, I'll give it a whirl. The one I did last year was 2nd gear and it wasn't this bad.

How's the fork look? There is so little dog engagement on 1st that a worn or bent fork can lessen that even more. Had to change the fork when I did my XJ 1st fix.

+1 the fork needs to move the dogs into the slots for full engagement ! Looks like you could still need the dogs slightly touched up, then the slots too just angled a bit to match the slight angle you put on the dogs. Take off as little as possible to retain the hardness.

All three forks look good. The LH I had last year had a burnt shift fork. It had the 2nd gear problem.it didn't seem as bad as this one felt. So I was expecting a bad fork in this one. I will take a closer look tonight after work to make sure. Then the fun begins on the grinding.

              Hey Tarzan,

Take a look at this one I posted in the TECH TIP!

As I stated in the tip, it was so worn that instead of a grinding disc, I first used a CUTOFF disc to slice down into the dog to remove a bulk amount before then dressing it up with the grinding stone. This was on an XJ that had the same symptoms you described....anything over idle and it would start machine gun skipping.

I've only heard of one person reporting that one of their repaired/ground gears actually BROKE off a dog, and he had only removed a smaller portion. The owner hasn't contacted me with any reports of problems after the repair. As has been stated in previous discussions, the hardening isn't that deep, but it's theorized that the dogs/slots get molded a bit to match each other because of less than perfect alignment of all 3 dogs and the slots after the grinding.

Don't forget you need to dress out the lands in the other gear also.

If you slightly do a dovetail cut on the dogs and angle the lands back a bit too it will actually PULL itself together when you engage it. Understand what I'm saying?

I actually did that on the last set I ground it works great.
