Anyone ever put brush guards on an XS? I use Hippo Hands in the winter, and my 80+mph commute ends up pushing the Hippo Hands back against the brake lever a bit too much. Last year, I put a stick of wood in there, but it wasn't very comfortable. I read somewhere that some people have added brush guards to hold the Hippo Hands away from the levers. I just can't tell if it's possible to mount them with all the "stuff" (master cylinder, mirrors, etc.) on the bars already.

Must be the gold label Hippo's you have. The tad larger blue label Hippo's or the hard-side ones with the fancy silver piping don't interfere. Have one set of each of four options they produced, one set being new in its original bagging.
Have used the gold label ones on the ST one time, but as you say, when they 'ride' back a bit from wind, etc. contacting the brake lever slightly, brake lite comes on. Those ones are a bit shorter where they ride up the arm, but are also a tad shorter on depth of the bar/levers area. Fortunately, since they were the ones I had on the bike at the time, I was able to aleviate that re-adjusting the five position clicker on front brake lever.

I have seen pictures of the reinforced Hippo Hands, but they don't have the opening in the top to allow the mirrors to stick out, right? If they did, I would LOVE to have a set of them!

They DO have the slit-cuts for the mirrors, and a shade of blue for the hard-sides with the silver piping......makes for a nice off-set color matching on the Venturer. SWMBO:"Awwww.......it has matching mittens to stay warm"..

The few times I've had a set on, I've used the soft-side ones that will go around mirror mount so they don't have to be removed. The handiest set of Vetter's are that heavy nylon outer, fleece lined inner, and roll up as a pair, stashed in one of the sidecases. Summertime, stuff a couple bottles of water in them wherever stored, and water stays cold all day while riding.; plus if in heavy rain, gloves will stay dry.

So, nobody has ever put brush guards on these things? I guess I'll have to head over to the local bike shop and see what they have.

I did see an ad for a set of Hippo Hands on ebay this morning! Too bad they are the same as what I already have. Although, these have a slit under the hand opening... Not sure why that would have been useful. Mine don't have that slit.

              milk jugs

A buddy of mine takes thick milk jugs...the home delivery kind ...slits them as needed and hose clamps them to the bars ...cheap and effective...

i made a set for warpig...

i bought the plastic for $20 and made my own brackets, they are not to hard to make. (just take a little time.)

i just used flat stock and a torch to bend it around.
i used (built) diesel oil fill cap style expansion plug to tie it into the handle bar end. and the other end is 7/8 split locking collars for shafts with a long nut welded onto it.
