  • Rear light won't turn off

Ok, so I have don't the LED Turn Signal Mod on my bike. The other day I was driving and the ground wire broke off the relay and shorted out the system. I looked down and there as a bunch of smoke. So I stopped and realized the accessory fuse wire completely fried all the way up through the wiring harness. I mean it burned off all the insulation from the wire. I traced the wire up through the harness until it wasn't bare and spliced in a new wire. Then I soldered in a new set of relays and hooked everything up. The turn signals work again but when I turn off the ignition the rear lights don't turn off. The only way I can turn them off is if I pull the main fuse. What do you think is the problem?

The XS11 has a PARKING LIGHT Feature where if you push in the main ignition key switch, and then release a little, you can rotate it farther CCW to engage the parking light mode. SO....it sounds like the fried wire also must have fried/exposed wires that are involved in the parking light circuit and so is energizing it! You have some more wire tracing and testing to do to eliminate the shorted wires that's keeping the tail light on.

      Also check your ignition switch....

You don't say, but if you're stopping the motor with the handlebar kill switch it could be the ignition switch. Try stopping the bike with the key only, if the motor keeps running it's the switch.

Ok so I followed the parking light circuit all the way from front to back but didn't see any burn marks or exposed bare wires. So just to test I cut the wire and of course the rear lights went out, but the front parking lights were on still. So while I was inspecting the circuit wire toward the front of the bike I accidentally touched a ground point with the exposed circuit wire and I heard a click and the lights went out as they should. So I soldered the wire back together and everything works fine now.

I wonder if the parking light circuit opened when I shorted out the turn signal circuit and by grounding it out it reset itself? Do you think that's possible, because everything works as intended.

Well, there shouldn't be anything to 'reset' unless the wiring has been altered. The only 'control' of the tail/running light circuit on these is the ignition switch, so I suspect that your ignition switch/plug may be failing...

That's what I thought as well. It's weird how that happened. You may be right concerning the switch. I will monitor it.
