  • Midnight Special Starter Solenoid Replacement

    Hello,

I tried to post this to the electrical maintenance forum but I don't have the privileges to post new threads anymore

To the point: I've got a 1980 1100 midnight special and the starter solenoid recently quit on me. I checked out the info in this thread:

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...arter+solenoid

& ordered a replacement from powercycleparts on eBay. It shipped quickly but today I got to wrenching today and both the rubber harness & the wiring connector don't match the stock. I sent powercycleparts an email and will see what s/he has to say... so far I'm only out ~$10US.

Just writing to see if anyone knows where I can find a replacement starter solenoid for the XS1100LG?

Also, I figured I'd crack open the old one to see if I can fix it...

Otherwise, this looks like the right one from newegg.com, sold by rareelectrical.com:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA1BY0S26058
    https://www.rareelectrical.com/c-10-...?section=-874-

Anywhoo - been awhile since I've posted, so hello to all & happy riding!

This is the one I recently bought. I had repaired mine (thought not very well) a few years ago, and it finally gave out permanently. This one just dropped in and works perfectly.

Is your stock one round or square? OFC this one is round...

      Hi CBug,

Thanks for the reply! The one on my '80LG is round. The one in your link looks like the same one I got thru powercyclesports from eBay. The plastic wire connector is different & the rubber shock mount on my Midnight Special is a little different - the rubber mount slots are 90degrees off set so that the face of the solenoid (the mount nuts) faces to the bikes right. With the rubber shock mount in your link, the solenoid would face the rearwards in a tight corner.

The rubber isn't a big deal as the new solenoid fits the old rubber, but, 34 y/o bike rubbers... I've sent back the one I got to the eBay seller & she says she'll send one that fits.

2 pics of the original starter (note the rubber mount)

...and one with the mismatched solenoid:

          Up & running

          Hello,

Got the replacement solenoid. Also had a blown fuse:

30 amps, outboard fuse, by the battery, front, clutch side. Not sure if it's a stock part, but after putting in a new fuse & connecting the new solenoid, we're up and running!

          Thanks for all the help,
          Patrick

The fuse is stock. IF you put in one of T.C.'s fuse blocks, you can do away with that fuse holder and have ALL the fused in one place.

So if you don't mind my asking

what solenoid did you go with? I am thinking Powercyclesports on Ebay sent you a replacement for the one you returned? Just asking ... I was thinking of grabbing one for my 80LG to have just in case.

Yeah, I wwnt with the replacement from the vendor - if yer orderin one from them just specify that you need a female connector.

                      Hey Cajun,

You may have already found it, but here's the ebay link:

                      http://www.ebay.com/itm/STARTER-SOLE...-/191235280343

However, they are asking almost $19.00 when most others are in the 10-12 range!? YMMV.
