wheel bearings?

i noticed that latley when i corner to the left,there is a feeling that the rear tire moves sideways feels like im loosing traction,but im going to slow for that tobe a problem..my wife says she feels the back end wiggle also...

i have new left side rear wheelbearings ready to install,but cant find right side bearings?

could it also be the swing arm bearings? icant really feel any side to side play with the bike on the center stand, and couldnt find any posts about the loose feeling back end

anyone else experienced this?

Any bearing supply store will either have it or be able to get it.
SKF NTN KOYO are all reputable brands.
I would check the swing arm first.

Okay, a few clues in your post. First, you're riding 2 up which puts a lot more stress on the suspension. But you didn't say how old the tires are or what brand...some have stiff sidewalls, others are very flexible. Next is what shocks are you using...30+ y/o OEMs?? If so, that could be a big part of the problem. The OEM shocks do not have expansion dampening, only compression, not to mention just 30 y/o tech and possibly just worn out?

TC, our OEM shocks have rebound damping, and no compression damping. The Specials have adjustable rebound damping. Aftermarket shocks usually have both.

And I think the manual says to up the rear tire pressure when riding 2 up.
BUT DON'T PUT IN MORE THAN 40 PSI, OR YOU WILL SURELY DIE.

the shocks are new, heavy spring progressives...I feel the shift in the rear end while solo riding,wife feels the wobbly feeling 2 up riding

while riding 2 up I run 42 lbs on a elite 3 in 50% condition....cause im a fat guy..it feels squishy and walloy if I only run 40 while 2 up

solo I run it at 38 to 40 depending...I prefer the feel of 38lbs while solo..

A bad wheel bearing will likely roar until it seizes. Once it seizes, it's going to make the hole going through the wheel a lot bigger.

Remove the rear wheel before you ride any more. If the right side bearing seized, it will fall out and it's time to get a replacement wheel. The left one will come out in pieces if it failed. If they're OK, move on to checking swingarm bearings. Likely, they haven't been greased in 35 years!

thaks for the replies..I think its time to put her in my shop for the winter and start over on the service work...complete re inspection..

I have re built the forks on it also,and dont have any fluid leaks,but neither side will hold air for more then a few minutes...could it be the seals? or did I miss something? I completely disassembled the forks and cleaned everything twice..it was super dirty..

I have about 2500 miles on it since i did all of the work on it...its an 81 special

If the fork seals go bad, they leak oil. Air can not escape via that path with oil in the forks. If there is no oil in there, you're riding a pogo stick. The air escapes out the top of the forks. The valves leak or.the cap seals leak.

thanks jet..Im positive that there is fork oil in the forks..of the recommended brand and weight,and amount..I followed what i found on here to rebuild them

i will look into the schrader valves and fork cap seals...where can i find the seals for the fork caps? thanks

do you have a special or a standard? The reason I ask is the fork cap gaskets seem to be available for the standard but not the special on Partzilla.... http://www.partzilla.com/parts/searc...cle/parts.html.

I can not get air to build any pressure in my forks either. Having just changed the oil I know it is to full to spec. I guess the soapy water test on the top is in my future

Hi Marty,
From the link it looks as though I am misssing some gaskets. The drawing is not clear but my cap has an O ring above the threads yet the drawing shows an oring for the air valve
Much of what i need is shown as no longer available.
It would help tremendously IF I had a clue as to what the hell I am doing.
