  • who is our best cycle painter on site?

I have painted well over 1000 cars, trucks and custom painted cycles and the previous. So my question is on my xs1100 special 79 it is factory black with the gold flecks in it and the paint/clear is getting checked and my question is might I get by with reclearing it and getting rid of checks without doing a strip and complete repaint? it is in very good condition with 20k on it seat is as soft as the day it was made and its always been in a garage and I don't want to depreciate its value if I ever decide to sell it or should I leave it alone? It is only visible if you look close at it I mean within a foot? I don't know how much clear Yamaha put on them back in 79? Professional answers will be highly appreciated.
    Till then
    Thanks, Mr.Bill

I am far from being the best painter but in my limited experience shooting new over old is not a good idea.

I'm also no expert but I can say that I've cleared over old paint and it tourned out pretty well. You need to wet sand pretty much all the old clear coat off and get down to the color coat.

The best rattle can clear coat I've found is this SprayMax 2K. It dries and it pretty rough (orange peel) but some wet sanding in steps with increasingly fine sandpaper and then a good rubdown with rubbing compound and it looks almost factory. And, the 2 part clear holds up well against gas spills.

I am by far an expert but the bad jobs I have seen like Gmac were like Greg described and they tried new over old clear. Old clear is not a good base and will peel.

Either sand all the clear off of sand it all off to bare metal. Unless you are doing a restoration, its probably easier to just try and duplicate factory as close as possible.

Gotta agree with BA80, the Spraymax 2K is awesome. Great coverage, hard to sag, and the metallic distribution is almost perfect (for a rattle can). The Spraymax Glamour Hi Gloss clearcoat is exeptional. Sanded with 600 up to 3000 grit over three coats and its gorgeous. Didn't have my handlebars set right and one side hit the tank before the stop and all it did was dent the clear, no chipping.

Not exactly to your point, but I was reading about a guy who has a flock of old Indians. He repairs any mechanical problems, but leaves the art alone, as in faded tank paint and chipped decals stay that way. He considers it vandalism against an art work, like gluing arms onto Venus de Milo. I guess original is original and restored is restored and one must choose.

              Rare tank for you .

I have a NOS 79 Black tank you could probably use. I bought it last year and am currently using it on my 80 SG while I reline my original tank for it. Had it on the 80 for about a month. Still have the Yamaha packing box. What say you, are you interested. Pay what I paid and it is yours. The tank is perfect. After I was quoted mega bucks to paint my original tank 80 SG the NOS tank price seemed CHOKE !!!!, ok.
