what was factory paint on xs11 79

Hey guys does anyone know what Yamaha used for paint on the 79 xs1100 special? If I had to guess it would be lacquer am I correct? Mine is black with the gold fleck in it and the surface is getting cracks in it like lacquer gets when its old. Did they use a clear coat on it?

so now I am wondering if I can get by with a light sanding on clear n recoat it and will that take care of the spider cracks?

code is 00H9 BG for Black Gold. You can get the paint here as one source.... http://www.colorrite.com/product/yam...ld-bg-1817.cfm. I have used them before for my bike paint and it was spot on. I recently had my whole bike repainted because my bike was doing exactly what you are describing. I had a reputable painter inspect it and his advice was to prep the surface you have for new base coat application with clear coat finish. Everyone has always told me to never take it back to bare metal unless you absolutely have to. I know by your other post that you stated that you have painted 1000 cars so I am not telling you anything you probably don't already know. I know that if you do go back to bare metal you have to prime with a self etching primer. Good luck on your project. Hope this information is helpful to you.
