  • oil pressure

i am currently running 4 quarts of valvoline 20w-50 cycle oil plus a 10% mixture of lucas oil stabilizer. under normal riding conditions everything is peachy. when i hammer the snot out of 1st and 2nd my oil pressure light starts a flashing. ( the reset is iffy so sometimes i can over-ride, most of the time i just gotta watch the red light blink.) the oil will be fine in the sight glass and after a day, or overnight it will go out. anyone else have a similiar occurance with their xj.

Yes. my XJ does something similar. I plan to replace the oil level sensing unit (XS does not have) with a new one. The unit is a bit like a can, and I think the float mechanism may be getting doggy after 22 years of service.

I've also found that if I keep the oil at the high side of the sight glass the problem is less frequent. Gotta check, though, as it will indicate low oil correctly most of the time.

That Lucas oil additive may be what your problem is. It makes most oils foam loke crazy. The oil actually turns creamy because of the amount of air whipped up inside. This may cause the oil pump to cavitate, and then the pressure drops , which triggers the oil light. It happened to me when I was using lucas oil stabilizer. I stopped using it and everything came back to normal.

        oil

interesting article. i wonder why he would use 2 seperate oils. i would want the control side to be the same as the additive side before i made a comparision.
