  • Beating a Dead Horse: Electrical v. Carburetors

My bike has been running very rich and getting worse. I have been getting fuel smell on start and at idle. It runs poorly below 3000 RPM.

I did not touch the carburetors!

I took the kill switch apart and cleaned it. I took several other connectors apart and cleaned them. I have more to do, but ....

I'm not rich any more. I can climb at 1500 RPM. I drove home last night 99.5 miles without the low fuel light coming on. I was getting the low fuel light at just over 80 miles.

So, I thought my carburetors were having an electrical problem and all indications are I was correct.

Personally, I like to fit green Dyna coils, iridium plugs and graphite-cored, silicone HT leads, with the resistors removed from the HT caps. I found it cured an irritating misfire on one bike.
XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. Progressive front springs. Geezer regulator/rectifier. Stainless 4 into 2 exhaust. Auto CCT (Venturer 1300) SOLD. New project now on the go. 1980 European model.
