    Finally got round to replacing my leaking valve seals on my '78E. Had a group ride a few weekends ago and I let my step-son drive the XS and I was following. MAN, what an obnoxious ride that was.. I knew she was burning oil, but the smell and puffs at stoplights was annoying.

    Anywho. Ordered and received new viton valve seals. yay! Having replaced them on an old Honda 650 and they did wonders, I figured the XS was 2 years older and they were probably dried out.

    Got the head off and the valves pulled just fine. Everything is in a zillion ziplock baggies with labels waiting their turns for cleaning and inspection.

    The carbon buildup on the pistons and exhaust was AMAZING. I am currently on day 4 of heavy-duty Aircraft Stripper scrubbing with toothbrushes and letting sit overnight on the head. I DO see the light at the end of the tunnel.

    Quick question about the head gasket. Someone has been in here before and the gasket fire-rings are great. The front where the 12MM bolt goes is all busted up. I really don't want to shell out 90+ for a gasket set. I was thinking of cutting a new tab area from some gasket material and using that where the stud is. Matching the original thickness as best as I can.

    Or, should I just use some black RTV in that area and hope for the best?

    Current head-cleaning progress. Still soaking from last nights application of stripper. I can see aluminum in the exhaust ports now tho!!


    This is a ZILLION times better than when I started. I would guess there was at least 1/4 inch of carbon in the exhaust ports and around the valves.

    Some say its OK to reuse a head gasket, but if it is the original or it split apart I would get a new one. This is what I used when I replaced my valve seals

    Worked great. I did need to re-torque after about 50 miles (5 rides to work).

      Wow! That is the BEST price I have seen on a HG for the 11.. But... Poland?? lol Ordered anyways just in case. Thanks for the link!

        I ordered two valve cover gaskets from him, showed up after about two weeks, cost: $25/two

          My good man I am totally with you on not being able to spend $$ on parts...BUT I would hate for you or myself to reuse a gasket when their is soooooo much precision work involved to reassemble- making sure the timing marks are lined up and STAY lined up and thus do not bend valves. Hate to see you have to tear it all apart AGAIN to replace the head gasket.

            Ya.. I'm waiting for the new gasket and a new inch/lb torque wrench that I ordered. Seems nobody locally sells in/lb wrenches. odd.

            Looks like first week of October before I get it all put back together. Guess I can at least get the valve shims checked.

              Hi Diskman,
              a conversion factor and a 4-function $5 calculator will get you from ft/lbs or even N/Ms to inch/lbs.
              The torque wrench range is what's important.
              Common wisdom is that torque wrenches are only accurate in the middle 70% of their range.

                Sears carries a real nice working click-type in.lb. torque wrench if you have a store nearby.

                  Not my local Sears. They had an inch/lb clicker 3/8 drive and started at 120 in/lb. lolfail.

                    Harbor Freight torque wrenches are so cheap you can get one in every range. For our purposes they work fine. They're usually very accurate in the middle of the scale. I picked up a couple of them last time they were marked down to $10.

                      Even my cheapo Princess Auto torque wrench came with a deviation/ calibration chart. PAis Canada's version of Harbor Freight probably uses the same vendors in China

                        I wish Sioux Falls would get a Harbor Freight. I'm sure that they would do GREAT here. I always seem to spend $500 or so at the one in Duluth, MN when I am up there. Picked up the motorcycle table/lift last year with the 20% coupon. Use the hell out of it. I will probably get another one next time I drag the trailer up there.

                          YeeHaa! Got her all buttoned up last night at midnight. (Work at 7AM lol).

                          Fired right up. Other than a smallish exhaust leak, and a largish oil leak from a not-tight-enough oil tube at the head, it started right up!

                          Sounds different too. Doesn't have that little misfire at idle that always irritated me.

                          Threw a nice carb sync on it and adjusted the carb screws.

                          It just sounds better. Will know for sure when I go home for lunch and drive it back.

                          Now to find a new seat pan and order some paint for the covers/tank.

                          Ended up re-shimming 6 valves too. Some were waaaay out of spec since I lapped the valves + 40K miles.
