  • 17" rear wheel convert?

I have a 79 xs11 special. Only reason I would want a 17" rear is because more tire options. I found a 17" rim on ebay listed as 78 xs1100. Is this a bolt right on deal? If not, please advise. If too much trouble, I most likely won't do it.

What about tire size? If rim is an easy task, can I do the 130/80 instead of a 130/90?

    Thanks!

edit,.....also found one for a 79 xs11. Seems to be same exact rim

There are fewer tire options with the 17" rim. Don't know what you have been looking at.

        Mr. Hammer,

The 17" wheel will give you fewer tire options, not more. Look up 130/90-16 or MT90 vs. 130/90-17.

I am not sure about the 130/80-17 on the XS11 wheel. The 17" XS11 wheel is a bit narrow, certainly narrower than the 16" wheel. I have to defer to a knowledgeable expert on that one. I wouldn't put the lower profile tire on that wheel without approval of a reliable expert.

A 17" wheel from a 1978 XS Eleven is not recommended for tubeless tires. Some will say it's OK, but the later model wheels are embossed or stamped TUBELESS. An earlier wheel is not identical to the later one and I'll leave it at that.

The 130/80-17 you see on the Triumph Bonneville or Moto Guzzi V7 goes on a wide rim.

          One more thing.

The XS750 Special had a 17 inch rear wheel. Which one looks better? Seriously!

I did the same thing on the 1980 Mongrel I used to have. You have to get the caliper bracket and the right side wheel spacers from the Standard model too. I thought it was worth doing but when I sold the bike, the guy wanted it back to the 16" rear for easy to find tires.

Anyway it dropped the engine speed about 800 RPM at freeway speed. This was just enough to put it in the sweet-spot for vibration reduction. I found the bike to be less tiring to ride with the larger rear tire. About the cost, I had all the parts on hand so it only cost me a tire that I needed anyway.

Maybe that's why you didn't get the hot rod looking Specials on your side of the pond. It certainly isn't something to be argued. You either like it one way, or the other.

Definitely. We don't get a lot of the US type models here and never did with the XS1100. One or two came over but they weren't popular and they don't sell here for anything like as much as the 'standard' euro model with 17" rear wheel. Funnily enough, tyre choice here is not really restricted. We still have several to choose from, so the wheel size isn't an issue at all. As Geezer pointed out, the larger wheel alters things in mor than just a visual or stylistic way. The XS1100 was marketed here as a mile-eating steed which could be ridden all day, comfortably, so we never were offered the hot rod type look as I doubt very much whether any would have actually sold since they are undoubtedly not designed with 500 mile non-stop runs in mind. Efficiency sacrificed to looks, as it were. Like you say though, one either likes it or doesn't. I'm fixated on the euro models....surprise surprise

                      Dual sport

I love the meaty tread pattern. Only 1 tire keeps coming up in dual sport 16" which I don't like.

                        Jet,
Thanks for the side by side. I DEF like the 16" rim with beefier tire better.

You just saved me some drama, thanks!

                          Mr. Hammer,

Here's another wrench for me to drop in your cogs.

This bike has been converted to 17" rim and wears the tire you like.

I think this guy nailed it!
