I guessed wrong last time Ben and Greg and I were changing the tire in the rain.

Do it now and put a lnger wearing tire on it. I like the Michelins and will try to go back when my Shinko wears out.

A new Shinko will make it there and back just fine, even from your place, John. Just don't show up to Little Rock with a racing slick for a rear tire (again) and you'll be fine for a much cheaper price.

John...theres no reason a brand new Shinko won't do the rally and back home..I did the same thing last year and my ride was awesome...took a whole year and 4400 miles to get that tar to lookin like it does.... Now if I rode that tire to the rally...I would be changing it once I got there...

Oh I am not changing this one yet - it only has a thousand miles on it yet.

But I really like the Michelin Commander II I got on Great Ranger at XSSE - unfortunately they do not make the Commander II in a size for the Standard only Special. SO I will try the Michelin Pilot Activ when the Shinko is gone. Michelin makes the Commander II for the front though!

Just changed out a Shinko 712 rear @ 8000+ miles. Performed well for me. Replaced it with a Shinko 231. $10 more than the 712, but with a belted tread. It felt amazing on a 200 mile run over some very crooked roads in NW Oregon Coast Range. Went through a tricky quadruple S curve that never went smoothly for me before, and with the new rear tire it was smooth as butter. 231 was $68 from Motorcycle Superstore. Great for the money.

not necessarily a waste Ron...I decided that its too m uch trouble to be changing the rear tire 2 to 3 times per season...Shinkos are cheap but then again you really do get what you pay for...Looking at my rear tire now the 712 has about 600 miles left on it and the middle of the tire has flattened out due to all the straight roads around here...so this time i went with a Dunlop 404 from the MC Superstore about $30 more than the Shinko but the mileage should at least double that of the 712...

I revive old threads all the time when relevant. Better to use the search feature, then start a new thread on something that has been asked ten times before.

I hope the D404 gives you good mileage, the front D404 on my 80SG made barely 8,000 miles. Performed fine, but not up to what I expect in wear.

I am running the Shinko 230 Tourmaster up front now, about 1000 miles and looking new. Will put a 230 Tourmaster in the rear if the Elite II ever wears out, over 10,000 miles and good wear left.

my front Shinko 712 is still good so the Dunlop is going out back...I expect to see at least 8000 miles from it...and go from 2 tire changes per year to one every 2 yrs...maybe once a year depends...

Post up back here when you reach the 8000 mile mark on the D404 rear! I got barely 8000 miles out of a D404 front tire, riding like a Sunday school teacher. I couldn't ever see 8000 or expect that from a D404 in the back. Good luck with it, I hope it does go that long for you.

It might be irrelevant or irreverent but back in the day I was riding my '79 XS Special between Boise, ID and Missoula, MT (multiple trips; kuhrazy girlfriend who lived in Missoula at the time) -- going the shortest/fastest way through Lolo Pass -- LOTS of mountain curves between here and there. It was raining one time on the way back to Boise -- miserable cold -- hardly any traffic. I'd approach each corner with caution in the dark, get about halfway through it, light that mutha' up and come spinning out sideways -- laughing like a madman -- each corner taunting me a little more, "Come on princess -- show us what you got!" I was a little younger and a LOT dumber in those days but I stop for fuel and a customer asks, "How long since you looked at that back tire?" "Aw, hell, I dunno'" as I'm walking out to see what all the fuss was about. The tire was worn down to the woven cords -- a patch about 4" long and 2" wide -- holy crap! I rode it another 130 miles home. They say Gato looks out for blind people and fools -- got my eyes checked shortly after that and they're both good!
