  • Wiring harness interchange

I bought an Lg from a member a few months back and am wanting to change the wiring back to as a stock as possible so I can locate the battery in its original spot and clean up the electrical. I will post some pics to show what I'm talking about.
I have an LH harness I could swap in, but I'm not sure if it will work with the LG's CDI and advance mechanism.
I also have a F harness that I'm not sure if it will work either, it sounds like I might have to use the switch housings off the F for this to work. And I'm not sure what else I would have to change.

Can someone steer me in the right direction here?

The LG and LH harnesses are basically the same, with two exceptions. One, you need the check the pinouts at the TCI as I don't believe these are all in the same places because of the different ignition boxes. The colors will match, but you may have to move some of the wires in the plug that goes to the TCI. Second, the LH may have the clutch/sidestand 'safety' switches and their attending relay/wiring. This can be changed out with a bit of study of the '80 wiring diagram, specifically the start circuit.

The F harness could also be made to work, but would be much tougher due to the hand controls, ignition switch, and relocated components compared to the LG.

After tearing out the old harness and installing another harness( thank you Big Dick), I have a few wires that I can't figure out where they go. Can someone clue me in here?

Notice the two wires here with no ends on them?

Also note the two black wires to the right, not sure what they connect to.

Also, this red/yellow is an orphan at the moment.

          Ok, here's my best guess....

The brown/green pair is likely the rear brake switch (the green should have a yellow stripe). The brown should be incoming power from the turn signal fuse, the green should go to the rear brake light.

The blacks should be grounds, although why they're where they are...

The red/yellow should be headlight power and connect to the headlight fuse; the other end should be at the headlight relay right above the coils. If the harness is a 78-80 unit, this could be the 'signal' wire to bypass the ballast resistor when starting, this comes from the TCI and connects to the starter solenoid.

If the harness has been hacked, then all bets are off...

Ok, the two blacks come right off the rear master cylinder, so I should be able to connect them to the brown and green, correct?

The red/yellow should connect right to the pos. Side of the solenoid if I understand correctly.

This harness has not been hacked. It had a couple bad spots that I repaired before installing. I tore out the old hacked up harness to install this one.

I appreciate your help Steve. Thank you

The blacks should come from the brake light switch; if they connect to the master cylinder, I suspect you have a XJ rear master. The red/yellow connects to the starter terminal on the solenoid if you have the 2H7 TCI.

              I'm confused; your signature shows a '81 LG', but a LG is a '80. A '81 would be a LH...

Its an 80 not an 81. I had an 81 last year. This is a different one.
I will change that ,sorry for the confusion.

BTW, the harness I have in it now is also an 1980 harness.

So this is why I am confused. The big red wire goes to the solenoid, so it seems odd that the red/yellow goes there too. Do they both go there? Or do I have something wrong?

They both go to the solenoid, but on opposite sides of the switch contacts. The 'big' red wire is the main power feed and connects on the battery side and is hot anytime the battery is installed. The red/yellow goes to the starter side, and is only hot when the starter is engaged.

                      Thank you Steve!
That works. I got it started up. Now to I just have to figure out the Vetter fairing wiring and I can ride it.
