  • ? about removing the Yamaha tank emblem

Once you unscrew the emblem, there is a recess in the tank with a steel bracket that "looks" glued in there. I want to smooth out my tank and get some air brushing done.

Is that steel bracket just glued in? I don't want to crank on it too hard and rip a hole in my tank. Thanks!

Leave the bracket there. You and just slightly bend the bracket in and then bondo over it. Plus then it serves to help hold that big chuck of bondo in place.

FYI, that bracket it spot welded in.

I used snipped fiberglass mixed into epoxy and it filled the hole with the mouthing flange in place. I bent the ears down a little. Epoxy is hard stuff so smooth it to subsurface and the finish with a skim of bondo.

I used a variable speed dremel with a cut off disc and slowly grinded the spot weld down. Takes some time but well worth it. As you don't want any moisture or gaps left under that little bracket. The cut off disc I used was the size of a quarter but not as thick as one.

          Hi hammer,
like Nate sez, the bracket is spot-welded to the tank.
          And I'd leave it there.
Fill it flush with bondo and the bracket will help hold it in and it won't get damp in there if you warm it up with a hot-air paint stripper or even the old lady's hair dryer before you put the bondo in.
Also, if you ever change your mind about the tank badges, you can dig the bondo out and put them on again.

Leave the bracket in, bend the tabs down and then Bondo in several thin layers. Do not try to fill it all in one application.
