My XS build, need some advice!

Ouch! I don't race but the cap's always held fuel in the tank pretty well for me except when I overfill it.

Yea it was my first track day after getting rid of the stock keyed gas cap for a nice keyless vented one. Oh well, I was more worried about how much the damage would set me back.

General question for you XS'ers... I know there's been huge talk of exhausts around here, but what's the opinion on unequal length head pipes on these engines? Any one ever try it, or am I the only one that's doing this?

I'm a fan of the wonderful gurgle of a subaru engine and I think with my cams it in, that thing will sound mean.

Not many of the members on here are into the kind of heavy fabrication techniques that you are doing. I don't know much about exhaust scavenging theory, but each cylinder puts out the same amount/volume of exhaust gas, and your first post in this thread said you were building a 4-1 system. If the header pipes were uneven, then I would think there might be a tendency for the pulses form the short pipes to try to go partially back up through the longer pipes vs. out thru the collector and muffler/tail pipe?? I don't know?? Or are you saying that it would just create a staggered type timing of the pulses so you would get a different sound when they finally come out the muffler??

Well like i said before, I'm running 1.5" head pipes to a 2.5" collector, so I think the gasses from the short ones wont necessarily jump up the long ones, but rather out the back. I will not be running a muffler, so it'll just be 2.5" to just about the center of the rear wheel. This isn't for performance, I'm strictly doing this for looks and sound.

I honestly haven't heard or read about anyone making unequal length exhaust headers for the XS11 for sound.

Usually it's from people that want to fab their own exhaust, or trying to improve/match the performance of the original factory exhaust system.

Sound travels at 1116 ft/sec so I think you will be disappointed if you build unequal length down tubes and think it will change the sound of the firing sequence.

Hehe, I've been watching them for about a week now. I never knew S&S made pipes for the 11. I think they are rare and many members here probably never knew they made them also. My guess is you would be very happy with them judging on the pics in his sale. I'd be real interested in what they sound like. Sound varies a lot between 4-1 pipes... Don't wait, snatch them up if they are in your budget. The only other system brand new right now is Mac and I have a hunch that these blow Mac out of the water as far as quality and performance, but I have no proof.

Since the race bike is pretty much back together, I had some downtime to work on the XS and got the coils installed. Those 8.8mm wires are pretty tough to work with, really needed to lube em up to get em to go anywhere, but the end result looks fantastic. Here are some pics.

Oh yea, here are the connecting rods I had Crower make. They are forged steel. Unfortunately in the process, they lost one set of bearings so they covered the cost of a full new set for all 4 rods.

The bike is looking good. I couldn't help but notice how low those pipes are sitting. I know I would scrape those. Is that just a mock up or is that how they are going to stay?

Pipes aren't gonna change much. The '05 R1 front end sags a little with the weight of the bike so I might have to change spring rates and adjust them accordingly in the upper and lower trees. The front end is just mocked up for now while I get adapters machined for the rotors. I'm a little worried about how low they are, but unfortunately there's not much I can do.
