  • hey everyone the build has started

Over the winter as I stated before the car port collapsed on my 79 special so instead of restoring it again I think I'm going to make some changes. I saw the gasser customs video on Jay Leno's Garage and I think that is the direction that I plan on going. I'm going to leave the rear swing arm alone because I like the shaft drive and if it aint broke don't fix it. although I really like the plate holder.

I am thinking of doing a front end swap from an R1 using classified motos service, (any other swap recomendation appreciated) for the upgraded stiffness and brakes. I'm going to upgrade the rear suspension with at least new stiffer springs. I am going to do the dremel fix to gears 1, 2, and 3. I'm going to try and make a 4-2-4 exhaust (still learning how to weld but its looking good) I'm in the process of doing a full carb rebuild/clean. It's going to be a long summer but I'm hoping to have it done and running by the end of the summer for some late summer riding.

How does the forum feel about these kind of mods.

pic attached of my proof of concept.

      Hey Rusty,

I fixed your photo link. Remember folks, you can click on the photo to see a larger image.

IF that image is actually of your bike, the OEM pipes don't look that bad, and you could have them cleaned and jet/hot coated to help them look good and last longer and a lot cheaper than trying to re-chrome them.

I posted a thread a while back of a project where I made a set of headers myself without any fancy pipe bending machine because I was able to use prebent pipe sections. Anyways, good luck.

If you're really going to be doing a lot of canyon carving, then that level of front end upgrade could be worth the work/$$. But for a lot less $$ you could put Standard forks/sliders to get the easier to mod caliper mounts vs. the specials wonky swivel ones.

Sadly that is not my bike, the one i have is a hacked up 4-1 that comes out on an angle, I'm not a fan of what i have let me see if i can kind some pics of mine.

I have 2 project bikes and this is the bigger of the two right now. So i'm going to build this one up over the summer and ride it if i can at the end. I'm not really set on the R1 I just want a 4+ piston caliper up front so i'm looking around the FJ1200 looks like it might be a little bit better (then stock) with the preload and rebound adjustment options, still in the design phase. but this is my proof of concept.

You may want to look up BikerPhil's conversion to the FJ front end. I've ridden the bike and it tracks like it's on rails.

I'd be VERY interested in a build thread on a 4-2-4 exhaust. It might be my winter project, assuming you mean 4 to 2 to 4. I'm planning a 4-to-4 with a crossover/collection chamber. My welder/builder buddy says it's a waste of time, but I love the look of 4 exhausts.

my welding skill is subpar at best but I too like the look of 4 exhaust pipes so I think I'm going to do it. I will photo it and post a thread after I complete it.
