If I run E10 in my 1981H, I get 36-38 MPG. If I run E0, I get 42 MPG and as much as 46 if I am behind a Hogsley Ferguson. I can tell the difference in the way the bike runs/performs on E0 as I am leaving the gas station. I will admit that the E0 is a higher octane, but the bike (and I) like it. The H is bone stock other than a K&N air filter. On my 1979SF - which has a few mods (carbs are stock), I get 32 MPG with E10 and 35-36 with E0. Have not been behind any HFs with this one yet.

I get 25-32 mpg. E10 or E0 makes no difference. I run E0 anyway. 87 or 90 octane doesn't seem to make a difference, either. My SG has 4 into 1 header.

Just got back, stopped to try and look up some lost buds. 68 mi. on but filled at 44, it took 1.59 gal., if my figures are right that's 27 mpg.. I filled up with E0 out there, 24 mi. after, all the stations were closed when I got back, I'll check ASAP. This was with the 97 E10.
Fun ride but a bit scary as I took the mini dragon trail through the woods of Kettle Moraine in the dark
I agree that is lousy gas mileage. You should be getting at least 32 mpg. Something is definitely going on with either the carbs or your brakes maybe both. I would check the float settings, jets etc... Before I redid my brakes my mpg suffered. My mileage is around 35mpg right now depending on how hard I get on it on the hwy. Can't resist sometimes.
Actually, if alls workin good, should be in the 40mpg range on that XJ.

I agree. I believe the specs originally stated 40.3 mpg. I believe that was based on the then limited speed limit of 55mph. With the highway speeds now at 70 and most everyone cruising at around 80 I don't think that 40mpg is that reasonable anymore.
I would normally agree with the increased speed limits. My Venturer new would run 46mpg two up all day long. Was peod cause I was told it would do the 50mpg range. That was at the double nickel speeds.
Fast forward to today, in referance to the XJ, Soccer4me(Mike) rolls at 40mpg, and that's across the Mojave to here from Caly. That is also with everything stock original, including final drive and motor, runnin' a constant 75-80mph.
Motor is also in the 125K range with nothing done to it cept for a timing chain replacement. You can see the bike in the pic posted on the Colo.Rally this past weekend.
So......in essence, blaming poor mileage and performance of the fuels of today is just an excuse used for setting too rich of idle mixtures for the most part..........and I proved that at the rally this past weekend with Bonz re-adjusting my recessed screw mixtures to my requested half turn from the 4out I had set at highest in. vac. with a made shorty screw driver while I lifed up rear of tank. Two different days and two different occassions we did this, bringing them in from 4out to 3 1/4 out. Still to rich riding home, so going in with them to my ORIGINAL 'lean drop method', which is coming in from way out, gradually till slightest change is heard, then out 1/8 to 1/4 turn at the MOST is where it's headed, which was 2 3/8's out from seated.
BTW, just coming in with mix screws same on all without running can ONLY be done if all RUNNING fuel levels are identically the same. PITA to set up carb bowls to do that on the early carbs, but easily done on the later carbs.
That is the ONLY correct way float/fuel levels can be done on the later carbs, as per the original Yammy service manual.
If needed be, I can give details of a local 81Special here(not a member), who is a near by neighbor here that has undisturbed carbs(tin covers have NEVER been removed), and original mix settings(1 1/2 out from lightly seated), and bike performs perfectly, and is extremely quick, as I've ridden it several times.
So, IMHO, the fuels being blamed for having to richen fuel mixtures and raising float levels is an urban myth at best.
Bonz's 80Special is another example of a perfectly running bike with him setting mixes at 1 1/2 turns out.......and fantastic mileage.
I'll get off the soap box now, and you all can take it or leave it, but you CAN be sure I'm giving verified information.......no urban myth BS.

I can truthfully tell you that if I keep the RPMS down under 5K I get around 40 - 42 MPG up over that the MPG drops exponentially.
At 80 - 90 (5.5 - 6.5K RPMs) MPH I get around 30 - 32 MPG.
Between there it varies.

Back to original question, any standard tank will work, losing the octy on your special will need to be done and vacuum hose off of front of each petcock on standard tank goes to #2 carb boot. The Venturer tank being the largest at 6.4gal.

Thank You for that ! Now what about the fuel level sensor ?
You loose that Done. The Standard has a guage and the Special has a dummy light and the senders don't interchange.
It's OK though, when you run out of gas on the main you still have about 20 miles on reserve.

Right. I don't think the level sensor can be used in the XJ tank either.
Watch the stuff on ebay and ask questions. I've gotten a few bad tanks on ebay.
