Hey Greg,
I remember finding it amongst the files on the Yamaha parts fiche site a few years ago. It referenced a problem with the vac. adv. unit on the later model bikes....IIRC the 81's, and that they actually had a different vac. adv. unit for the fix.
I also think I remember someone/Xsive posting a copy of it on our site, but I didn't make a note of it!

I would imagine the leaner burn needed a bit more advance....a bit sooner.
Coulda' just richened things up a bit, but guess that woulda' been counter productive for the emmissions gods
. Bettin' largest percentage here don't have this issue due to second option, plus we get an little extra kick in the mid-range
.
