I've got an XJ1100 that was running for about 1 1/2 weeks. I parked it one afternoon and it got rained on for about an hour. When I went to start it up again, it would turn over, but had no spark whatsoever.
The coils are good. I thought that the leads were bad previously, but it was just one spark plug cap that had gone bad. Could this have damaged my Ignition control unit? Is there a way to check out the circuit board? I know there's another post about that very subject but I was under the impression that the XJ's TCI also was responsible for advancing the spark under speed as there is no vacuum advance on the XJs.
I'm pretty certain the battery's fine. I can check it with my multimeter. Is there anything more to checking it than testing the volts?
Spark plugs are good. I don't even get a shock when holding the leads to ground.
Again, the bike will turn over but there's no spark. If I hit the kill switch, the bike won't turn over. It's in Neutral and the clutch has no effect on spark. I've tried with the kickstand up and down to no avail. I've had a Brake warning light on ever since I hooked up the battery. I think there's a sensor bad because I've checked both reservoirs and the fluid levels are fine. That's the only other electrical complaint I've had. Other than the 2nd cylinder firing intermittently. I've now traced that down to a bad spark plug cap so it should run on all four cyllinders now...once I get spark figured out that is.
The only other thing I can think of is that there is one hell of a lot of electrical tape on the wires. I've found many splices already and had to go through the fuse panel thoroughly recrimping and replacing spade connectors. If I'm gonna have to chase this down in the wiring, I'd prefer I had a manual to look off of.
I'm getting pretty frustrated as I have had minimal time to work on the bike with College Finals and papers due. The weather never seems to be in my favor either.
Oh well, I'm in love with the experience and wouldn't trade this old bike for a new one off the showroom floor anyday! I've put too much of myself into the bike to give up now! I don't think I would have felt this way if it weren't for you folks lighting the way with all of your FAQ's and prior postings! You've saved me a week of Sundays working on my bike!
