I have a stock speedometer that works fine and the auto cancel works fine on it. I also acquired a 160 mph speedometer that does not auto cancel. It does have the reed switch intact and I inspected it and it seems to be fine, however I am not sure. Can it me checked with an ohmmeter and if so what should the reading be? Is there anything else that anyone can think of that could be different between the stock meter and this one that would cause the auto cancel to not function?

Could be in the connections ? The reed switch works off a magnet spinning inside the speedo that also moves the needle, if the needle is working it's either connections or the reed switch itself that is the problem. You can carefully change out these switches, they are easily cracked.
I've been thinking of pulling the auto cancel, I don't like it turning off when it wants to, let me decide when to turn them off !76 XS650 C ROADSTER

A Duh moment
Thanks for the input Done, I will give that a try. I also can check the known good one against the one that is not working. I like the self cancelling feature, however I understand where you are coming from on it cancels when you might not be ready for it to.2 - 80 LGs bought one new
