  • Anti-Seize,,,ThreadLock,,,Yamabond,,??

As I'm getting my new(to Me), Xj1100 up to snuff,,, well, basic maintenance,
I've picked these up as I've been following advice given here, as I progress.

Now I've been wondering,,Is there a "Rule of thumb" so to speak,,as when to apply these in general use?

Or When do you use,,Anti-seize,,ThreadLock,,YamaBond,,or something else I should have in my tool box????

Anti seize use on spark plug threads and on any fasteners you replace with stainless steel ones.

Yamabond, use as or with gaskets to prevent oil leaks.

Threadlock, use on bolts that are prone to loosening on their own.

I tend to avoid liquid gasket unless I don't have the proper gasket on hand or the cover has leaked on me in the past. Otherwise, I like to use the paper gasket with a light coating of grease. That way, when I remove the cover, I'm more likely to be able to reuse it.

I tend to put thread locker (blue only, NEVER red) on every bolt UNLESS I am replacing with stainless steel. You don't need to go crazy with thread locker, just a little dab on the end as it will spread out when inserted. A little bit goes a long way. With stainless steel, I use anti-seize out of concern for galling from the dissimilar metals.

It's very important that you get a torque wrench if you do not already have one. Many of the bolts on the bike take only 7.2 ft-lbs. If using harder stainless steel fasteners, you need to reduce the torque applied to prevent shearing the bolt.
