Front end noise

Hey gang, I've been experiencing some front end noise that worries me alot. It only happens over 20-30mph and when I hit a dump. But it doesn;t always happen.

They sound is like a metal screeching/scrapping sound. When it happens once I've slowed to almost a complete stop the sound disappears.

This sound didn't start until a friend loaned me the front wheel off his bike ( not sure of the model name, but it was a yamaha early 80's and 920cc Twin V motor w/ a swirl to the spokes instead of straight like mine.) because my tire was bald as a new borns behind. I not wondering if maybe I got some dirt in a wheel bearing or the speedo gear. Or if on of tose was on the way out and it went totally when i swapped tires.

OOPS forgot, my moto is a '79 XS11 standard.

Not sure if this is the problem but its worth a look. I had something similar and aligning the forks took care of it.

Got a similar sound on my XJ. Tracked it to the spedo drive unit. Took it off, found the main gear rides on a shaft, not a bearing. Removed the gear, lubed the shaft with with lithium grease. Put it back together and on the bike. Noise went away.

Check the condition of your brake pads. They can sometimes drag slightly, but they shoulnt make that kind of noise unles there is metal-on-metal. Another possibility could be a speedometer cable about to go.

OK, first off thx for the responses so far gang. I checked the break pads and they're still pretty thick on the back side.

I checked the spooedo housing and i can move it alittle side to side and out some. Looks to be alittle more then 1/16th of an inch of space there though. So if there's too much space will it do the same? I was thinking just take it off again and apply some fresh grease to it and the axle and reinstall it. When I do this an hints besides what's been posted yet?

OK, others alredy told u all the possibilities I could think of...
But the 920 yammie... Probbably an early XV or TR1
