  • Carb / plug problem

I have a new to me restored 79 XS 1100.

I have a bit of carb issue. When I accelerate it seems as all the carbs are not synced and do not come on evenly until mid range then they all function just fine. Also when I shut the throttle off to coast or slow down I get a few backfires from the right side exhaust.

I am think that I might have sparkplug issues.

    What are the groups thoughts?

there is a procedure for syncing the carbs but it requires either buying or building a sync tool.

Initially, you likely have a broken pickup coil wire rather than a fueling issue. Not to say the carbs my need some TLC, but the ignition issues ARE cause of majority of running issues, not carbs.

        Running Problem

If you have not or do not know when/if the carbs were synced, they need to be. Sometimes the pilot screws can be turned in too far and cause this "backfire". That is part of the carb sync procedure. A good number is 3-3 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.

The pick up coil wires should also be checked so as to eliminate them from the equation. Look at the plugs. If they have been firing in a good air/fuel mixture, the tips and center insulator should be light tan to light brown in color. Have you ridden enough to determine your MPG? You should be capable of 35+ MPG.
