Hi all! I'm Lepy from the Seattle area. I co-own a custom motorcycle shop that specializes in sport bikes(mostly). I've been on 2 wheels since I was 4 and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. I've raced tracks in Washington and Oregon for the last 8 years. Meanwhile I found myself in national championships in motorcycle drag racing in bracket style(low budget!). I've owned at least two bikes of almost every major brand, this being my 3rd Yamaha.

Ok, the bike! 80' xs1100SG not sure what the original color was.... Title says green, but it also says it only weighs 420lbs... Anyhow, this bike came to me basically because the owner took it apart and couldn't get it back together. All the stock parts seem to be here! My plan at this time is to restore it and get it running! I'm sure a few purists will not like that I want to convert it to a cafe' bobber. I have all the means in the shop to make this into yet another amazing and award winning show bike.

Ill post up some pics of the bike in its current form, it has always been garaged, but it looks like it has been down on the left side once at medium speed. The speedo is busted up, the odometer reads 11330 miles. The tank has a poor bondo job done to it. I think he was going for a green p51 shark mouth sort of look.

So that's me and the bike!

What does the SG mean? I understand its a special?

"G" means 1980. I have an XS650E, XS6502F, XS1100SG, XS650SH, and XS650SK. This translates to 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1983. All of the XS series motorcycles end in the letter that designates year.

Your SG was not green from the factory, it was Black Red, or New Ruby Red. Black Red is black with flecks of red glass in it. It's the only color I've seen on an SG.

I like cafe bikes, but I rarely see one executed that appeals to me on an XS Eleven. Perhaps you can pull it off. I have close friends in Bremerton, so I'll have to check it out next time I get up that way.

      Welcome aboard!

        WELCOME to the forums, Lepy!

IMO, turning a stock Special into a cafe/bobber is a difficult proposition ... from what I've seen, it seems that achieving a balanced look is not easy.

But, a few have been able to find that balance, and the results look nice ... and it sounds like you know a thing or two about motorcycles ...

So, have at it! Just remember to post some pics of your build ... we love pics! And keep us in the loop; maybe we can help along the way ...

As to the weight, Yamaha claimed a 556 lb. dry weight for the SG ... add a full tank of gas and the various fluids/oils, and you are at 590-600 lbs.

Part of my job is working with the ladies. This is one of our sport bike builds.

The helmet we made to go with the bike.

This was the first pic I saw. I got pretty excited about the lines, all the possibilities!!

Rolled it into the basement and mocked up the seat and tank.

I'll be putting it back together all stock first off. I really just need to make sure it runs before I invest a bunch of money into paint and fabrication. I have a crate full of parts that all look brand new. I've been told it's been garaged its whole life and it shows! No rust, just a few bumps and scrapes from a low speed lay down on the left.

I was thinking mono shock with a floating seat, but with the direct drive I'm not sure about the stiffness of the whole frame with this big of a bike. I will sacrifice style for function. I wish I had some of the original color to color match the rest of it.

Ill post up some more pics as I go along through it...
