  • Went thru 16 search pages. XS/XJ Reg interchange????

I swore I have read the XJ regulator rectifier can be made to work on an XS. I searched via in a hurry but did not find how to do the wiring of the plugs. My 1979 XS1100F broke down on me Labor Day Weekend. Just bought a good used XJ regulator. XJ has 2 red and 2 black. XS unit has 1 black and 1 red. Tie together the black and whites of the XJ unit?

XS unit botom--- XJ unit top. Similar but different. How do I install XS plugs to XJ unit? Thanks!

You'll have to move the XJ's Voltage Regulator/Rectifier terminals to the appropriate slots in the XS11 connectors. Take your time and be careful so you don't accidentally put the wires in the wrong row/'upside down', especially in the 6-pole Rectifier connector.

Do not connect the White wires together. The White wires are the output from the alternator stator to the Rectifier half of the voltage Regulator/Rectifier and that'd be a direct short.

The Green and Brown wires are used for the Voltage Regulator half of the Regulator/Rectifier. Move them to the 3-pole XS11 Regulator connector.

There are two unused/open slots in the XS11 Regulator and Rectifier connectors:

The unused/open slot in the 3-pole XS11 Regulator connector mates up to a 3-pole wiring harness connector that has a small 18 gauge Black wire along with the Green and Brown wires. The Black wire is just a short loop that runs through the wiring harness, then back over to the electrical ground tie point on the Regulator/Rectifier mount screw. Don't use the 18 gauge wire, just put one of the XJ's 14 gauge Black wires in the XS11 connector and put a ring terminal on the other wire. Put the ring terminal on the Regulator/Rectifier mount screw along with the other Black harness ground wires.

The unused/open slot in the 6-pole Rectifier connector can be used for a second Red wire but unless you're up for slicing and dicing the wiring harness to add a second connection for the Red wires they'll have to be spliced together to use the single terminal in the XS11 connector.

Thanks 3phase. Im gonna print it and review carefully. Kind of daunting. I was hoping it was a simple "Connect the corresponding color" deal. I really want a unit from Geezer but its a tough summer.

          Got it.

It is a straight wire-for-wire color swap from the XJ Regulator/Rectifier to the XS11 connectors.

Since there are an extra Red and Black wire in the XJ11 Rectifier section you can cut and cap them or use them -- it's your choice!

Ahh so nice to be charging the battery again! Bike broke down the saturday of Labor Day weekend so it was nice to ride it again. Over next winter I plan to remove the head- clean the carbon, lap valves and install new valve seals. Then Id like to upgrade to an Oregon cycles regulator. If funds permit Id like some new Emgo Dunstalls maintaining the crossover with some type of fabbed setup in the current location.
