  • Hello new bike here

Hey I just pickjed up a new (for me) 1980 XS 11. It has been sitting arpound for a while uncovered but I have a new exhaust pipe and there apears to be no rust on the engin. It is going to be quite a bit of work I know because it looks like just about everything is shot.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about how long and how much it will take to repair this immobile bike and maybe where to get started.

As far as i know it is not siezed and if it is I can rebore the block if necessary.

By the way I am going to be doing this with as littlke $ as possible and all myself with the help of a minimal of tools, I have standard automech tools and a few came with the bike but none are specialty tools.

Thank you now for responding, I hope that this site will help me in my long journey.

    Welcome!

You're in the right place at the right time. The right place because this is where you'll find the most comprehensive knowledge store about XS11's that has ever been compiled.

The right time, because before you take a wrench to your classic, you can look up all of the maintenance posts and get a leg up on doing it right the first time around.

Unlike many of us who learned by trial, error and skinned knuckles!

Use the SEARCH feature to look up info, and if you don't find what you're lookiing for, ask away.

The only dumb question is the one you didn't ask.

          seized

I kept putting off chicing to see if this free bike was seized because I wanted to work on the bile so badly but it is.
Wish it wasnt true but I am psyched about the xs 11 and I will be looking for another. perhaps I can find one that has been wrecked and swap the engin but as for now i am sadly bikeless.

            are you sure

When I got mine it had been sitting for about 6 years in a garage. The brakes were locked up, motor was also. I removed spark plugs and put a couple ounces of Marvel mystery oil thu the plug hole and let it sit for 3 days. Then installed kick starter and started working it kinda gently, got it to move. I checked this by puting a pencil in plug hole to use as depth gage, it moved a little put in more oil let sit another couple of days. I kept doing this till electric start could roll over the engine. The first time I got it running it looked like I was fogging for mosquitoes. This was 15 years ago and once I got it running it has never let me down.
