How to change speedometer cable on 1979 yamaha xs 1100 special motorcycle??

Just ordered a new speedometer cable for my 1979 Yamaha XS 1100 Special motorcycle and the one I received appears to be different than the one on my bike. Both ends of the new one look identical, can anyone clarify if there is something I am missing or not seeing correctly?

Check the threads between old cable and new. Or just try putting it on the speedo drive or the speedo

Sounds like you ordered (or at least were shipped) a standard Speedo cable.

DAMMIT! I told you to make sure you got one for a special because the standard cable is completely different.

Did you order it from ebay?

Yup, the 1979 Speedometer cable for an XS 1100 vs an XS 1100SF are definitely different.

          Thanks.

Oops.. I thought I had discussed the speedometer and the cable with you recently. Apparently it was someone else.

            My bad.

Easy. just adjust the flux capacitor to infinite negative and disengage the warp drive so the antimatter isn't disrupted and step into the time space continuum and the bike will seem to be frozen in the worm hole and it'll be a snap.

Don't forget your dead blow hammer and rectangular drive screwdriver or you will have wasted someone elses time.

                  You might have an accident
Changing it on the move would more than likely require 3 people, 2 motorcycles and a side car

Stop the bike first and on center or side stand (center would make it easier) take the old cable off top or bottom, follow the old cable route with new cable, take off the other end and connect the new cable. Bob's your uncle

No problem, but there's this round gear gizmo attached to the bottom of the cable, that attaches to the wheel hub, what's the easiest way to remove this part?

What usually fails, the cable or that gear?

                    Thanks,

"Usually" neither one fails. The speedo drive is driven by the rotation of the front wheel via a pawl in the hub. The drive itself has two gears in it. Clean and add new grease to the drive and to the speedo cable.

It is necessary to remove the front wheel to do this and you should check the wheel bearings and seals while you are in there. Parts are readily available. This is an easy job to do.

It's USUALLY the speedometer that goes bad first.

Would normally think so, but the cable wadded up a year after I bought bike new. Made up a new one at work with the square stomping die and tinned both ends with solder. Doubtful for but a few here that have seen or done this. Actually still have many feet of cable left, but has worked fine even to this day(lubed new cable with Sioux air gun grease before sliding in housing. Speedo itself is still original and gps's dead-on accurate with 82,180 on the clock...

Yeah, I've had 1 cable go bad but I've been through 8 or 10 speedometers.

When the cable broke I got one of those universal kits from the auto parts house. It worked fine for a while but it only lasted a short time so I put a new one on. A new cable isn't but $10 or $15.

I've had one cable go and it was because it got crushed by the triple tree due to poor routing.

I was surprised how long it lasted before it went while being open to the elements.
