  • Valves nice and bent, just the way I like them...

Well, I left slack between the intake cam sprocket and exhaust cam sprocket, they got out of time and I bent up all my exhaust valves...New heads are in on Thursday.

For the record, there should be ANY slack between the crank sprocket, the intake sprocket, and the exhaust sprocket, right? Also, I should be pressing in on the guide runner where the CCT is to make sure it doesn't jump a tooth, right?

Best part is I've done this successfully 2 times before this.

78 E - 2to1 exhaust, dynatek coils, special headlight [SOLD!]
79 F - gas tank refurb, headgasket change, straight pipes, late model carbs, virago lowering shocks, special headlight and gauges, TC fuse block, GSXR-1100 carbs (WIP)

I have no idea how 3 out of 4 even got bent. I didn't even turn the crank more than 180 degrees before I felt the binding...I don't know what's wrong with me. For some reason I'm having the hardest time getting the timing right.

Been there my self. When I first got my 78E I bent the valves then got a replacement head and promptly bent those valves also. I then decided I needed to read ALL the manual

Good luck with the replacement (I'm sure you will do better than I did)

I'm getting even more frightened of switching to an ACCT every time this happens to someone.

I'm hoping one of the gurus will speak up and say something about the tension. It seems like there shouldn't be any slack between the intake and exhaust when you install the CCT but the manual has no mention of it.

The only slack should be on the front side of the chain so that the tensioner can can take up the slack when it is doing its job.

No way! Speak up about the right way to do it, jinx myself and bend MY valves?!

What were you trying to do, just check/reset the stock tensioner or add an automatic tensioner?

If you did all of the things you mentioned and the cam chain still fell off or skipped teeth you may need a new cam chain along with the new valves.

What's weird Gabe is that I was REALLY STUPID when I bent my valves, and even ran the engine knowing something was amiss (I was very ignorant regarding the mechanicals of the bike then), and my valves were nowhere near as bent as your's.

Orange4- The right way is to not do anything without knowing exactly what's going on, or what ur getting urself into. I felt confident on the procedure and went ahead with it. However, when I hit a certain point (dots not aligning), I was ignorant on how to proceed. Instead of stopping and asking for help and waiting for a response as Rasputin and Greg, and a few others advised, I instead went ahead and did the wrong thing resulting in four bent intake valves.

When I tried it again, I had a better understanding of what exactly was going on, and all went smooth for the most part (with the exception of my timing bolt shhoting through my ignition cover, lol). Learning lesson was patience pays off.

Also, doing the ACCT mod with the valve cover off is a must. Put on C, swap-out, swap-in, hand-rotate three or four times, and all should be well.

That's what happens when the exhaust sprocket jumps a few teeth. The only two situations where bent valves SHOULD occur from slight timing deviations is either from intakes opening too soon or exhausts closing too late (what happened to me). Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ian made a good point when we were texting earlier. The manual says to install the cam chain guide AFTER you install the CCT but in reality it should be placed in there BEFORE to prevent slack from being artificially put in the cam
                          chain.

Well, if I remember correctly, it's hard to install the bridge after you put the chain back on the sprockets and bolt them down. I believe Don made the point on that, which I followed.
