  • 4 way flasher

    XSers,
I found a 2 prong flasher in my parts bin and plugged it in, the 4 way (emergency worked) flashers flashed about 6 times and I turned them off and tried the turn signals, good, both left and right work.
Turned off the signal and hit the 4 way, nothing now, worked for about 6 seconds when the spare flasher was first plugged in ?
Went to the auto store and picked up a 2 prong flasher, plugged it in and nothing, signals still work.
Power goes to the flasher when switched on but no 4 way ?
Ideas ? Thank You ! Done

The switch is either corroded inside or there's a wire making intermittent contact for the flashers. Mine does the same thing and I've fixed it at least twice before. As long as my signals work I'm done worrying about something I hardly ever use.

      Thanks Greg,
I'm just nuts about making things work.
I've a spare left hand switch gear, might plug that in and see if it makes the 4 way flasher work ?

I presume you know the signal circuit and 4-way circuit are totally seperate?
Just curious as you kept referring to 'signals work but not four-ways'.

Yeah, I've been contemplating mounting another remote switch somewhere for the flashers. I just can't keep the one on the handlebars working.

            UD,
The E flasher switch is in the bottom of the control. It gets corroded quickly.

Yeah, the last time mine worked right was in a HEAVY downpour in Chattanooga on the way back from XSSE 2 years ago. I turned them on so the cars on the freeway could see us. I couldn't see Harry 30 feet in front of me. It's been intermittent since then.

Thought there might be a connection as the signals won't work when the flasher is in the ON position even though the flasher doesn't work.

The switch does disable the signals when it's in the on position.

I think it's the switch. Mine disabled the turn signals when the 4-way was inop. Contact cleaner flush fixed it.

                        Hey Greg,

I had gotten a replacement left control switch assembly when I first did my rebuild in 2000, and didn't realize that it didn't have the ER switch/wiring!

I spliced into the harness just under the seat and behind the left side cover, mounted a dpdt switch( couldn't find a DpSt), ran the 12+ from the ER flasher to the Center post, the splices to the turn signals to 1 end of the switch post. The just reach under the side cover to throw the ER flashers, when not thrown the splices are separated/isolated from the harness so the turn signals still work. JAT!

Won't believe what I just spent 3 hrs. on. Pulled the ER flasher on the SH, soldered wires just fell off. Wanted to make sure I wired it correctly pulled the LH switch gear, solder let loose and fortunately I looked at both long enough to know where the wires went. Pulled the spare switch gear apart just to make sure and it was like new. Soldered all back up and the LH worked just fine, soldered the SH back and no flashers. Took the LH switch out wired it with the like new spare, worked. Put the working LH switch in the SH, NO WORKY. Pulled the tank to check connections and thought I'd just check before going any further,,,,, now the flashers are working. Put all back together and all is fine.
