  • New 1st and 4th Gears?

I have the bike upside down and have removed the axle drive. I purchased a used set of gears and they don't look too bad.

I found a new 2nd gear at a reasonable price and I'm going to do the 2nd gear washer swap, have the gear ground a bit to facilitate a washer on each side of the 2nd gear.

The Question: If I bought a new 1st and 4th gears (they seem to be available on a number of sites), would the dogs be tapered or would they be the same as the originals.

If they are the same as the originals, I may as well give the ones I have a "Dremel Touchup".

If they are an improved version of the originals, I may just purchase the new ones...

Any thoughts and thanks in advance...

Either choice...............one, several hundred dollars.........other, few bucks for a dremel stone and your time.

      Thank Motoman...

      Motoman,

      Thanks for your speedy reply...

I've read many posts about the dremel fix...I think this would work well for my bike...

BUT, If I bought new 1st and 4th gears, would they be the later version and I wouldn't have to do any grinding?

Has anyone purchased the new 1st and 4th gears and were they the newer versions?

      Many thanks again...

        Tenorman,

I replaced 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th with new gears. I bought them a long time ago. I paid about $25 ea for them. I really couldn't see any difference in the new vs. the old. Whatever you buy is going to be old stock. It could be anything. With the washer move accomplished, it shouldn't make any difference.

New replacements, still available from Yamaha, the dogs will be tapered. But, as has been said, NOS will not have the tapered dogs.

The Dremel fix is not always successful, as even advocates of this fix will agree. Given the aggro of getting the transmission out etc, I personally wouldn't feel easy about grinding the gears, putting it all back together and finding it either doesn't work properly or develops problems in the near future. There have been posts on here where the Dremel thing was not successful and necessitated gear replacements.

            James,
Searching by my own methods shows 1st, 2nd, and 4th available. Are there more. I wouldn't expect them to mix and match. (tapered v. non)

I swapped out both gearsets on my '82 XJ...the new gears came backcut from the factory(Yamaha) The tranny problem will never re-occur in the life of that bike....

                Thanks for the replies...

The used gear set that I purchased looks good....I was able to find an new old-style 2nd gear and the dogs on the 5th wheel of the used set look really good.

I have a local machine shop grinding the new 2nd for the washer swap, (one washer on each side) for better engagement.

The 1st and 4th look good with almost no wear...BUT, if I can get a new tapered 1st and 4th, that may be the way to go. Even though I would need to spend a couple of hundred, it may be worth it to me to solve the problem and not have to worry about doing it again.

                Best regards,

If the dogs are tapered, the slots have to match. Do not add any washers to the countershaft. Just move it from one side of the wheel to the other.

                    Thanks again....

My thoughts were to use the new 2nd gear (with the washer swap) and the good used 5th gear wheel...then purchase the tapered 1st and 4th gear set...

Would this work if the 1st and 4th set are both tapered?

                    Thanks again...

The tapered dogs need to be engaged with tapered slots. I believe there should be no exception. They need to be matched.

                        Thanks again...

                        Yes and thanks....

The new 2nd gear that I purchased is the old style with no tapering to match the old style 5th...

The new style (with tapering) gears that I would install would be the 1st and 4th gears...

                        Does that sound correct?

                        Many thanks again....
