Might wanna pull the shifter cover and look see that the shift pawl alignment marks are aligned when in second gear. Alignment is a cammed adjustment amd lock-nut at shift shaft assembly. Pics and procedure are here on site.

Motoman--Could that advice also apply to a second gear problem in FIRST, or am I stuck doing the "fix"?

Possible..........on the centerstand, engage it to second gear, remove shifter and cover and have a look-see. Most likely the latter though. My original motor ened up with the first gear not staying engaged, even under the slightest clutch engagment, which I still have complete, never been apart. The 81 replacement motor out of a Venturer ended up showing the issue in second gear at approx. the 20K that was on it when I installed it. So ended up dropping that shaft assembly out the bottom and dove-tailed the load side all the gears with 'dogs' and angle ground all slots, including the 'bottom' slots to complete the dove-tail fit. Some swap a washer location for farther engagement of the dogs, but in my trannies case, possibly from a slight machining difference, had full engagement of the dogs and they were flush with backside of slotted gear, so left well- enough alone with no washer swap.

3rd gear really doesn't have the same problems as 1 and 2. You gotta kick these things into gear pretty manly like. Like Fred says "They shift like a Russian tractor".

I don't think that'll do it. It'll need to be ground I'm sure.

Third gear in these already has the 'fix' (backcut) from the factory (why they didn't do all the gears is a mystery), so that's never been an issue that I'm aware of. Shift 'firmly'....

I think it was 81XSProject(Jesse) that had his 3rd gear go out like 1st and 2nd, and so he actually had to go in a 3rd time, because he didn't to 1st and 2nd together. And then again when 3rd went...! Yes, it is very rare, but it can suffer the same malady, especially if folks avoid using 2nd and quickly go into 3rd before attaining adequate rpms, so 3rd gets more stress more often.
