  • Hose on airbox / which intake boots are plugged?

I'm about to install the octopus again and carbs. Now, i can't find info on which intake boots are plugged. I know one of them has a little hose, i have that on boot 1, i'm not sure where it goes.

Also the big hose form the airbox, where does that go?

#1 & #4 have plugs, and #2 & #4 goto the petcocks (Standard). Big hose from airbox should goto the crankcase breather on the engine.

Not a standard. If he's installing the octy, then it's a special. In that case Either #1 or #2 will work for the octy control. The other 3 get plugged.

The airbox/breather hose goes from the middle top of the airbox straight down to the breather on top of the engine.

Oh and of course, the vacuum advance coming from the left side cover routes up between #1 & #2 carb boots and goes to nipple on #2 CARB (Not boot)

True but not necessarily know to all the people here, especially new members.

Only specials had the octy since they had manual petcocks. Whereas the standards had vacuum operated petcocks they did not get the octy from the factory.

Since tank swaps also require petcock swaps this sometimes can get a mix and match of things. Since his signature line only states "'81 XS11" we don't know for sure what model he has or what parts he has on the bike. If he has a special with a standard tank or a standard with donor carbs that came with the octy then the octy shouldn't be put on the bike.

Thanks Nate, You're right. I forgot to specify. I ASS-U-ME-d it was a special.
Now he's got both ways listed. (Octy vs non-Octy)

Hey George- Like you, I assumed it was a Special based-upon the "Octy". However, I have never seen or worked-on a Special. So, I gave what I thought would help

                Ooh, forgot about this thread,
I'm not totally sure on the model. The title of the bike just reads "XS1100S." And i keep forgetting to look at the vin plate. It has no plastics either.
So i'm not actually sure what version it was, it came with the octopus but no airbox. I ended up buying this airbox (BOX #3434) off ebay

This appears to be the closet one i can find that matches it because of this seat (which I want to get rid of if anyone wants to sell me a lower profile or tracker seat)

And i was trying to keep the octo and route it stock with the airbox.

The smaller tank and upswept handlebars make it special not standard.
The petcocks should have 2 outlets one is a prime and the other on/reserve.
On just about every special I've seen, there's a sticker on the underside of the seat that shows the octy diagram routing. (not sure about that banana seat though)

There may be one in the manual. (if you don't have a manual yet, goto this site: http://www.ringler.us/family/mybike.html)

It has a tank like that picture you posted? If so that is a special tank and could use the octy with that.

I think it's the same, my tank looks more red then that magenta...but it might be the color of the photo. And the tank does have two petcocks with two outlets on each.

I have pics of the octo diagram, but I was uncertain that 3 of 4 of the boots were plugged and one had small hose that I don't know where it goes.

My bike had 110s for all four, the kit i got came with 120s and 125s...I put all 120s in there and the nice K&N filter. I haven't got it all back together, but it's close.

Okay, so you've got the diagram, the one hose that's hooked to the carb boot goes to the 'top' of the octy. That's the vacuum source to open the valve to allow fuel to flow.
The other 4 ports on the octy are your fuel lines.
                            Hope that clears that up..

120's might not be too big. In my opinion, I'd like to err on the side of too rich rather than too lean. I've burnt holes in too many pistons by running too lean. I'm getting to be a pro at piston replacements.

I'd say, try the 120's and check your plugs after some miles and see.
If you don't have the stock exhaust, ie. some other aftermarket ones and you're adding a K&N, then upping your main jets one or two sizes is where you might need to be anyway.

Make sure the float height is GOOD! and you probably will want to verify that the actual fuel level is where it needs to be in the bowl too. (you can do this by using some clear tubing in the bowl drains.)
Having the fuel height incorrect will greatly affect your performance.
