Ok, regulator plugged back in and working.

Now back to the fact that it was running rough when this all started and the regulator failed on me to begin with.

I am running on only 3 cylinders,

Number 3 header is not hot.

It is getting spark, pulled plug and grounded to engine.

I have heard you guys talk about the coils and testing, is there a coil test for dummies thread or is there something else I should check first?

    Thank you,

    Steve

If your getting spark then the coil is working. Does it start firing if you raise the RPMs?

I just ran it for about a minute at 4k, the pipe did warm up a little, but I can still put my hand on it.

I had pulled the carbs and cleaned them, and did a vacuum sync about a month ago.

          All cylinders were firing then.

          Idle set to about 1100

Try swapping that plug to another cylinder and see if the miss follows it.

The problem stay on cylinder 3, it did NOT follow the spark plug

OK....one more thing to try before I say you've got carb issues again. If you have enough spark plug wire, swap #3 and #2 wires on the plugs and see if it moves the miss to #2.

                  Still cylinder 3 not firing.

I am assuming the carbs need to come off?

Is there a certain part of them I should pay closer attention too?

Pay special attention to the idle/pilot circuit and make sure it's very clean on ALL the carbs. That's the pilot jet, the idle mixture screw, the 3 small holes in the throat back behind the idle mixture hole, be sure you don't have a mixture screw tip broken off and stuck in there. AAAAAnnnndddd......be sure the transfer hole between the main well and the pilot well is open and clean.

Do you have pic of what you mean by

.be sure the transfer hole between the main well and the pilot well is open and clean.

I will look into them again.

                      Thank you for you assistance.

Ha ha ha, actually I do have a pic. I just took these the other day for another member here. I stuck a sewing needle in there so you can see where it runs.

If that hole is blocked you will have NO fuel going into the pilot circuit and it'll misfire unless the throttle is wide open. Ask me how I know......

                          Thank you Greg,

I will hopefully have some time this weekend if the rain can hold off for a while.

                          Don't have a garage unfortunately.

Thank you for the pics, it will help a lot.

                            Not Firing

Try tapping the bowl on that carb. Could be that the float is hung in the up/closed position. Or remove the drain plug from that carb to verify whether or not there is fuel there. If you have compression and spark for that cylinder, fuel is the only thing missing.

If no fuel is the problem, a float bowl gasket may be the cause of the problem.

All is fixed now. I did pull the carbs yesterday, tore them down, soaked all the jets again.

There was crud in there again.

Once I cleaned everything, and put it back together, all cylinders are firing and its running much better.

Thank you all, but especially Greg for the step by step diagnosing. It was very helpful and again, I have learned some more.

                              Once again on the road.
