  • Fork Seal, which way is up??

I'm right now replacing my leaking XJ fork seals using the tech write up Crazy Steve did and have discovered that the old seals in the forks are not oem, they are not as tall/thick as the oem replacements I putting in so they had a washer in between the seal and retaining clip. My issue is I'm not sure which way to put my new seals in since I had nothing to compare them with. The new oem seals have different IDs on either end...one is about 1.415 inside and the other side measures about 1.350, the small side has the "edge" that I'm guessing is supposed to keep the oil inside the fork. Each side has the small spring to help keep the tension on the round opening. Hope I made this clear enough so somebody can set me straight before I wreck $30 worth of seals!

    fork seals

It depends on what type of seals you bought,
there are numbers/letters on the seals that tell you size and who made them, when you install them those will be visible looking down into the fork leg,Also the open side of the seal will face down, the little spring on Yamaha seals will not be visible after you install, hope I have worded this in a way you can decipher.

They are OEM seals, not aftermarket. I see the numbers stamped on one side so you're telling me that side should face up/out. As far as the springs go, there are 2 on each seal, one visible from either side.

As rdmcguy stated. Lip and lip tensioner spring ALWAYS goes towards what your sealing in on oil and grease seals.

          +1 choosing the OEM seals.

The lip tensioner springs on both sides of the seal had me wondering, installed them with part numbers on seal visible from above. Thanks.

......guess it could, forgot they're a double-lip seal to help keep unwanted stuff out and keep the oil in.
