  • what tires now

After not riding my bikes for a couple of years now I see the Dunlop 491 in 17" for the rear seems to have become extinct.
What tires are the "go to" tires for the Standards?
Son is driving my car so I guess I have to get one back on the road to get to/from work. Tires, battery, and go through carbs.... the reason I was wanting to sell them.
    Thanks all

Good to see you back again, Pat.

I am about to do a tire change also and am thinking of switching from the Metzlers I usually use. I know several members have used Shinko tires and have the usual good and bad experiences.

Perhaps some of them will chime in.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

712 & 230 Shinko's for the price and wear are pretty good. Not the stickiest but does not wear out as fast and irregular. Mine have done well. Some other tires are not what they were in the past. The Dunlaps and Continentals used to be good but not the same compounds as in the past.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Unfortunately, ALL manufacturer's tires are using compounds that USED to be on outsides of tread and now in center, with outsides being even a softer compound. For long wear, the Metz880 is still the longest wearing, but it does give up some wet adhesion and cornering ability. Still, there are several choices out there in the 130/90/17. The Dunlop 404rags will be coming off mine soon for a pair of ContiGo's on the Venturer.

BTW, MotorcycleSuperstore has got the best prices still, since Keel Bros. in Atlanta, Georgia have finially closed shop(retired IIRC). RockyMountainATV in Colo.Springs comes close in pricing and also free shipping.
